Classical meets Crossover in British Style
The Schleswig-Holstein Proms were introduced in 2023 as a new major format within the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (SHMF). The model was the London BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall: a dense, popular orchestral program in an atypical hall, plus a rain of balloons at the end and a relaxed, festive dress code in the British style. In Neumünster, in the district of Neumünster (a district-free city) in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the format takes place in the spacious Holstenhalle 1 — an exhibition hall that combines unusual acoustics with an unconventional concert atmosphere.
The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival was founded in 1986 by Justus Frantz and is one of the largest classical music festivals in Europe — the 2026 season runs from July 4 to August 30. Every summer, the SHMF uses over 200 concert venues throughout the state: churches, barns, castles, concert halls, and indeed Holstenhalle 1 as the home of the Proms. With the Proms, the festival has created a popular format that reaches classical music newcomers.
In 2026, British conductor Wayne Marshall will once again lead the Proms — a recognized specialist in crossover programs and a guarantee for the right mix of serious classical performance and entertaining presentation. The Odense Symphony Orchestra from Denmark provides the orchestral sound, invited through the SHMF's traditionally strong engagement with Denmark.
With its 4th edition, the Proms are firmly establishing themselves as a must-attend event in the SHMF calendar. Two evenings, likely to sell out, embedded in the summer program of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival 2026 (July 4 – August 30).
Classics from the English, German, and Russian repertoire: Edward Elgar (likely Pomp and Circumstance as the finale), Ludwig van Beethoven, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and others — the final program will be published a few weeks before the concert on shmf.de.
Rain of balloons at the finale, British dress code fun (crowns, Union Jack scarves, festive attire), sing-along to popular pieces — classical music in a show format.
The exact program will be published in the summer of 2026. Based on experience, the program will follow this structure:
