All Saints' Day Break
Traditionally, market operations are restricted or completely suspended on All Saints' Day (November 1st) — the public holiday in NRW requires quiet. In 2025, there was a complete break on Saturday, November 1st.
Tip
Market Sunday, with the opening ceremony, coffee service by the heritage association, and the hot air balloon competition, is the most atmospheric day. Those who prefer a quieter experience should come on Monday.
Schlänger Markt — Over 200 Years of Folk Festival Tradition in the Lippe District
As autumn draws to a close in Schlangen, one of Ostwestfalen-Lippe's oldest and largest folk festival traditions begins: The Schlänger Markt has been celebrated uninterrupted for over 200 years — a flea market with rides, live music, and culinary offerings that takes over the entire town center of the municipality in the southern Lippe district. For 2026, the market is traditionally scheduled for late October / early November; the exact date will be announced by the municipality of Schlangen at short notice. The previous edition in 2025 ran from October 30th to November 3rd.
What Makes the Schlänger Markt Unique
The Schlänger Markt combines classic folk festival elements with unusual program items that few other markets offer:
- Rides and carousels for all age groups
- Market stalls and flea market with crafts, textiles, toys
- Live music in festival tents and on stages in the town center
- Hot air balloon competitions as special programming
- Wood sawing demonstrations as a nod to Lippe's forestry tradition
- Special exhibitions in the Schlangen village museum
- Opening ceremony with participation from the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein
- Coffee service on market Sunday by the association
The Heimat- und Verkehrsverein as the Schlänger-Markt-Verein
The organizer and co-host is the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Schlangen, which operates under the name Schlänger-Markt-Verein. The association actively supports the market: from the opening ceremony and special exhibitions in the local village museum to catering on Sunday. Chairman: Joachim Burchart (deputy chairman). This voluntary dual structure — municipality plus local heritage association — is typical for the smaller, established folk festivals in Lippe and guarantees the market's deep roots in the community.
Schlangen — Municipality on the Southern Edge of the Teutoburg Forest
The municipality of Schlangen, with its approximately 9,000 inhabitants, is located in the southern Lippe district, on the southern edge of the Teutoburg Forest and thus at the transition to the Senne region. Nature-wise, it is characterized by forest, heath, and moorland areas — the Senne and the adjacent Senne military training area with its rare animal and plant species are worth seeing. Despite its manageable population, Schlangen hosts one of the largest folk festivals in the region with the Schlänger Markt — a cultural anomaly explained by its centuries-old market tradition.
Lippe — District with a Vibrant Folk Festival Culture
The Lippe district in North Rhine-Westphalia comprises 16 towns and municipalities around the district capital Detmold. Folk festivals, Schützenfeste (marksmen's festivals), and markets characterize the rural event landscape — the Schlänger Markt is one of the oldest and largest examples, standing alongside the Detmold Spring Festival, the Bad Salzuflen Horse Racing Week, and the Lemgo City Center Kirmes (fair). A folk festival scene that has largely remained under the radar in Germany's hectic event calendar and therefore feels particularly authentic.
