Centuries-old market fair for the Apostles' Feast in the Four Castles Town
The Schiltach Peter- and Paul Market is one of the oldest market fairs in the Kinzigtal (Rottweil district, Baden-Württemberg state). The market date's connection to the Apostles' Feast of Peter and Paul (June 29th) is a typical example of medieval market tradition: church festivals structured the annual calendar and served as natural market dates. In Schiltach, the Peter- and Paul Market was once the town's most important market fair – a significant economic event in the annual cycle of the rural population.
The venue is Schramberger Straße – Schiltach's historic main axis, which runs through the medieval town center. From 8 am to 5 pm, market vendors set up their stalls along the cobblestone street. The offerings are classic:
The historic small town of Schiltach (~3,800 inhabitants) lies at the confluence of the Kinzig and Schiltach rivers. It is nicknamed the "Four Castles Town" because of the four medieval castles that once stood in and around Schiltach. The old town of Schiltach, with its lovingly restored half-timbered houses from the 16th to 18th centuries, is considered one of the most beautiful in the entire Black Forest. It was rebuilt several times after devastating town fires – the current building fabric dates mainly from the reconstruction phase after the fire of 1791.
A visit to the Peter- and Paul Market can be ideally combined with a stroll through the old town:
The Peter- and Paul Market is just one of several market fairs in Schiltach. Other dates: St. Joseph's Market on March 19th, St. Andrew's Market and Schiltach Advent on the Friday before the second Sunday of Advent. In addition, there is the creative craft fair on the last Sunday of April, the farmers' market on the third Sunday of October, and a weekly market stall every Thursday in Gerbergasse.
On Monday, June 29, 2026, Schramberger Straße will transform into a lively market fair from 8 AM to 5 PM. Vendors from across the region will set up their stalls along Schiltach's historic main axis. Textiles, household goods, tools, toys, candied almonds, honey, jams, and grilled snacks will characterize the offerings. Set against the unique half-timbered backdrop of Schiltach's old town, the market becomes a meeting point of Southern German market tradition and medieval town architecture. A stroll through the market can be ideally combined with a visit to the market square with its fountain, the Pharmacy Museum, or the Hansgrohe Aquademie.
Schiltach is located on the B294 (Freudenstadt–Hausach). By train: Schiltach station (Hausach–Freudenstadt line). Parking is available near the old town; not in the pedestrian zone itself.
Monday, June 29, 2026, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM.
Free admission.
Allow time for a city stroll – Schiltach's old town with its half-timbered houses is one of the most beautiful in Southern Germany. A visit to the Hansgrohe Aquademie is also worthwhile.
