About Schauinslandkönig
Schauinslandkönig — edition 2026
2026 Program — Anniversary Edition
The 20th edition of the Schauinslandkönig falls on July 19, 2026, a Sunday. The course follows the proven route: start at Bohrer in Horben (approx. 480 m above sea level), finish at the Schauinsland summit (1,284 m). The first 800 meters with about 12 percent gradient are considered a psychological hurdle; after that, the gradient eases into a continuous mountain rhythm.
The individual time trial format means that each rider starts individually — no mass start, no drafting, no tactics other than one's own pacing strategy. Timing is done electronically via race result; results are processed live during the race.

Germany's Largest Mountain Time Trial
The Schauinslandkönig is Germany's largest mountain time trial — and at the same time one of the most extraordinary: Instead of the pure professional racing scene, the format opens the course each year to a wide spectrum of sports equipment, from professional road bikes to unicycles, from handbikes to child trailer bikes. This makes the Schauinslandkönig not just a competition, but a sporting festival with a Volksfest (public festival) character, which stages the Schauinsland — Freiburg's local mountain at 1,284 meters — as a common goal for around a thousand participants from all disciplines.
The 20th Edition on July 19, 2026
2026 is the anniversary year: the 20th edition will take place on Sunday, July 19, 2026. The course runs along the closed Schauinslandstraße (L 124) from Bohrer in Horben to the Schauinsland summit — 11.5 kilometers with around 800 vertical meters. The steepest ramp is right at the beginning: around 12 percent gradient for a good 800 meters. Whoever survives this effort has the hardest part behind them.
13 Categories — From Road Bike to Unicycle
The variety of permitted sports equipment makes the Schauinslandkönig unique. Permitted are: road bikes, mountain bikes, trekking bikes, gravel and cyclocross bikes (no e-bikes), tandems, handbikes, unicycles, inline skates, ski rollers, recumbent bikes and cargo bikes, longboards and skateboards, folding bikes and child trailer bikes. Each category has its own classification; the special categories (unicycle, longboard, inline skates, ski rollers) start separately between 11 a.m. and 11:20 a.m. The main categories start from 10 a.m. every 8 to 12 seconds in individual time trial mode.
Timing, Teams, and Crown
Timing is done electronically via race result. In addition to the individual classification, there is a team classification: the three fastest participants of a team are added together for the total time. The winners of the main categories are crowned "Schauinslandkönig" (King of Schauinsland) or "Schauinslandkönigin" (Queen of Schauinsland) — titles that have gained recognition in the southwestern German cycling scene.
Freiburg, the Schauinsland, and the State of Baden-Württemberg
Freiburg im Breisgau (around 235,000 inhabitants) is the fifth-largest city in Baden-Württemberg and is located on the western edge of the Black Forest in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald (the city itself forms a district-free urban district; the Schauinsland is located in the adjacent district). At 1,284 meters, the Schauinsland is the highest point in the southern Black Forest — and accessible from the valley floor via the cable car. The old mountain race track was a meeting point for the South German cycling scene for decades; the Schauinslandkönig has taken over this heritage and transformed it into an inclusive format.
