Three days of celebration by the Bürgerschützenverein Versen — King's shooting and tradition in the Meppen district on an April weekend
Versen is a district of the town of Meppen, the 'Hasestadt' in southern Emsland. Despite being incorporated, Versen has retained its village identity and, with the Bürgerschützenverein, maintains one of the district's central traditional bodies. The club sees itself as the guardian and preserver of local tradition, organizing the annual Schützenfest as a key event for the village community and for fostering connections with neighboring clubs.
In 2026, the festival will span three days, from Friday, April 24th to Sunday, April 26th. The early date at the end of April makes the Versen festival one of the first major Schützenfeste of the season in the Meppen area. Friday evening marks the ceremonial start with assembly and the first evening celebration in the tent. Saturday features the grand Schützenball with dance music until late into the night. Sunday is dedicated to the king's shooting, the king's proclamation, the king's dinner, and the king's dance.
The king's shooting is the central sporting and symbolic highlight of the Schützenfest. In the shooting competition for the wooden bird, marksmen vie for the title of king. Whoever shoots off the last splinter is proclaimed king and chooses his queen. The new royal couple will represent the Bürgerschützenverein Versen for one year at guest festivals of friendly clubs and will carry the club's banner on festive occasions.
Meppen, with its various districts, is home to numerous active shooting clubs that celebrate their festivals throughout the season. The Versen festival at the end of April opens the Meppen shooting season, and the festival fits into the region's busy festival calendar. The connection with other Meppen and Emsland shooting clubs is maintained through reciprocal visits and joint activities.
The three days of celebration offer space for all classic program elements of an Emsland Schützenfest. The exact program schedule will be announced by the club in advance.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
