Cross-border beer festival on the Saxon-Bohemian border
When Bärenstein in the Saxon Ore Mountains and Vejprty (German: Weipert) in Bohemian Bohemia celebrate their "Gemeinsame Mitte" (Common Centre) once a year, the border becomes a festival mile. The Saxon-Bohemian Beer Festival is a symbol of German-Czech neighbourhood – a cross-border Volksfest that puts the tradition of brewing and distilling art from both countries at its centre.
Since the opening of the "Gemeinsame Mitte" in 2013, the beer festival has been celebrated every year in June. The event has grown from a small opening celebration into an established Volksfest with over 1,000 visitors. Saxon breweries from the Ore Mountains present their beers alongside Bohemian breweries from the North Bohemian Basin – a rare opportunity to taste both brewing traditions side by side.
In addition to beers, the stalls offer Saxon and Bohemian specialities – dumplings, goulash, bratwurst, stollen. For children, there are entertainment activities, a bouncy castle, face painting, and other family-friendly offerings. Live music from Saxony and Bohemia accompanies the day.
Bärenstein is located in the Erzgebirgskreis district (AGS 14521), Free State of Saxony, directly on the border with the Czech Republic in the upper Ore Mountains. Its twin town Vejprty in Bohemia, separated from Bärenstein only by a border stream, belongs to the Czech region of Ústí. The connection between the two places has always been close – and is publicly celebrated annually with the Beer Festival.
The festival concept has followed the proven line for years: Saxon breweries from the Ore Mountains present their beers, Bohemian breweries from Northern Bohemia their specialities – a tasting that makes the brewing traditions of both countries tangible.
Since its first edition in 2014, the festival has grown annually. Over 1,000 visitors now come from the Ore Mountains, Bohemia, and the wider region to experience the "Gemeinsame Mitte" (Common Centre).
By car via the A72 (exit Stollberg-West) and then via the B95 to Annaberg-Buchholz, then to Bärenstein. By public transport to Annaberg-Buchholz, then by bus.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Beer, food, and individual programme items are subject to a charge.
Those who want to get to know the Bohemian side can stroll over to Vejprty during their visit – the border is open, and both towns together form the "Gemeinsame Mitte" (Common Centre).
