Volksfest to open the season of Germany's smallest ferry on the Krückau
Seestermühe is a municipality in the Haseldorfer Marsch in the Pinneberg district (Schleswig-Holstein), on the south bank of the Pinnau river between Hamburg and Elmshorn. The Kronsnest Ferry — a small passenger ferry that boasts being the smallest ferry in Germany — has connected the two banks of the Krückau for centuries and is a tourist highlight of the region. It commutes daily between Seester (Pinneberg district) and Neuendorf (Steinburg district) from May 1st to October 3rd.
To open the ferry season on May 1st each year, the Kronsnest Ferry Association, together with the neighboring municipalities, invites you to a colorful Volksfest. Small festival zones are set up on both banks — music, snacks, encounters with the ferrymen and the volunteers. The Meierhof Möllgaard, a local farm, is present with a food truck offering hot and cold drinks as well as specialties. A tradition with deep roots in the rural Pinneberg marshland.
The region between the Pinnau and Elbe rivers is a hidden gem for nature lovers: bird sanctuaries, vast meadows, small farms, and a piece of German marshland identity, often used by families from Hamburg for day trips. The season opening festival fits this character: down-to-earth, without commercial intrusion, connected to the water and the history of the place. The ferry itself has been documented since the 19th century and is maintained by a volunteer association.
The 2026 season opening will take place on May 1st from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. On both banks of the Krückau — in Seester on the Seesteraudeich and in Neuendorf on the Steinburg side — there will be music, snacks, and drinks. The Meierhof Möllgaard, a local farm, will be present with a food truck offering culinary specialties. The Kronsnest Ferry will run regularly between both banks during the festival.
