The first major city festival of the year in the Sälzerstadt — Salt boiling with cannon shot on Palm Sunday
The Sälzerfest officially opens the Salzkotten event calendar every spring. It is the first major city festival of the year in the East Westphalian Sälzerstadt, thus serving as the social kickoff after winter. In 2026, the 6th edition takes place on Palm Sunday, March 29 — a carefully chosen date that combines spring, the week before Holy Week, and a folk festival. The core of the festival is the market square and Lange Straße in the city center — the historic salt-boiling area of the city, which gives the festival its name.
Salzkotten owes its name — and its over 1,000-year-old identity — to salt boiling. Since the Middle Ages, salt was extracted here from brine springs by Sälzer (salt workers) in open 'Kotten' (huts) at the market square. This tradition lives on today: the Sälzerkollegium, a symbolic fraternity of salt boilers, preserves the custom and appears in historical clothing at major city events. The Sälzerfest makes this tradition visible with a public salt boiling demonstration at the market square — a living piece of local history right before the visitors' eyes.
The festive opening is marked by the traditional salt boiling at the market square. Members of the Sälzerkollegium in historical attire boil the brine, scoop the salt, and symbolically hand over the first salt packages to the city. The ceremony is accompanied by:
This opening is the most emotional moment of the festival — anyone who wants to experience the Sälzerfest should be there for the opening.
Throughout the festival day, 92 stalls are spread across the market square and Lange Straße:
The mix of handicrafts and culinary market distinguishes the Sälzerfest from a pure funfair — the quality standard of the exhibitors is high, with a focus on regional craftsmanship.
The city sets up a Family Oasis on the market square with:
This family focus has been consistent since the first edition — the Sälzerfest explicitly sees itself as a cross-generational festival, not an adult folk festival with a beer-soaked atmosphere.
A special spectacle of the 2026 edition: the graffiti artist Lukas Michalski creates the entrance archway for the district shooting festival live in front of an audience — a preview event for the major shooting festival taking place later in the summer. Those interested in street art can follow the complete creation of a graffiti live here.
The Lange Straße becomes a car-free festival mile, with shops open from 1 PM to 6 PM — the classic Sunday shopping. This combination of folk festival and shopping opportunity attracts additional visitors from the Paderborn district.
The 2026 6th Sälzerfest combines historical customs (salt boiling at the market square) with contemporary family and market culture. Salzkotten becomes a festival mile amidst spring temperatures.
