Weatherproof Advent Market of the St. Johannes Schützenbruderschaft 1653 on the 1st Advent
Those who like Christmas markets but shy away from the rain and cold outdoors will find a charming alternative in Salzkotten: The Adventsmarkt in der Sälzerhalle takes place annually on the 1st Advent weekend in the municipal event hall — weatherproof, cozy, traditional. From November 28 to 29, 2026, the Sälzerhalle on Upsprunger Straße 1 will open its doors for one of the most beautiful Advent markets in Ostwestfalen.
The organizer is the St. Johannes Schützenbruderschaft 1653 e.V. Salzkotten — one of the oldest marksmen's brotherhoods in Westphalia, founded in 1653 during the Reformation. The brotherhood not only cultivates traditional marksmen's customs with its Schützenfest and king's shooting but also engages in charitable and church activities — the Adventsmarkt is one of them, supporting community projects and those in need in the region.
At the festively decorated stalls in the Sälzerhalle, you'll find sweet and savory specialties — from bratwurst and potato pancakes to Christmas stollen, gingerbread, and roasted almonds. Accompanied by mulled wine, children's punch, and festive cocktails. Craftsmen and artisans offer Advent decorations, candles, ceramics, jewelry, and small gifts. Throughout the weekend, there will be performances by choirs, brass bands, and kindergarten groups — an Advent program that adds rhythm to the market.
The Sälzerhalle is Salzkotten's central civic hall, located at Upsprunger Straße 1 near the city center. With its spacious hall, stage, and foyer, it is the venue for concerts, conferences, Schützenfeste, and, of course, the Adventsmarkt. Its location in the city center allows visitors to combine their market visit with a stroll through historic Salzkotten — and to arrive conveniently via public transport from Paderborn and Geseke.
Salzkotten is a town in the Paderborn district in Ostwestfalen with around 25,000 inhabitants. The name refers to the centuries-old salt-boiling tradition of the region — the brine spring was Salzkotten's most important economic asset from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Today, Salzkotten is a state-recognized resort, nestled in the rolling landscape of the Teutoburg Forest, with a historic old town, remnants of the city wall, and the parish church of St. Marien. The Adventsmarkt combines this urban identity with the festive culture of Advent.
On the 1st Advent weekend, the St. Johannes Schützenbruderschaft opens the Sälzerhalle Salzkotten for its traditional Adventsmarkt. Festive hall decoration, mulled wine stalls, specialty stands, and an Advent program characterize the weekend.
Admission to the Adventsmarkt is free. Food, drinks, and market items at usual Advent market prices. Proceeds from the brotherhood go to community and charitable projects.
