Chamber music, classical, and jazz at exceptional venues in the state capital
Saarbrücken Summer Music is arguably the most charming concert series of the Saarland summer. From early August to late September, over 20 concerts are spread across the city—not in traditional concert halls, but at 13 exceptional venues: churches, courtyards, galleries, industrial monuments, sometimes even a bar or a club. Each venue becomes a stage for sound.
Programmatically, Summer Music rests on four pillars: chamber music, classical concerts, jazz, and new music. Occasionally, there are also staged productions and musical theatre formats. The artistic direction emphasizes diversity and interdisciplinary collaboration between regional, national, and international artists. Each year, the focus shifts—sometimes more string quartets and song recitals, sometimes more improvised music and crossover.
What makes Summer Music unique in the German festival landscape: All concerts are free. The state capital Saarbrücken finances the series as a cultural gift to its citizens and guests. A low-threshold opportunity to experience high-quality music—and a format that aligns Summer Music with Saarbrücken's culturally modest yet charming reputation: substantial content, little pomp.
Recurring venues include the Stadtkirche St. Johann, the Schlosskirche, the Ludwigskirche, the Großer Sendesaal of Saarländischer Rundfunk, the Hochschule für Musik Saar, and always unusual locations like the club die Wand or galleries from the independent scene. The journeys between concerts thus become a discovery of the city itself.
The programs combine Saarland ensembles (such as the Kammerorchester Ricercare, students from the Hochschule für Musik Saar) with established international artists. The Davidoff Trio, renowned jazz formations, and soloists from the international classical scene are regular guests.
The 2026 edition of Saarbrücken Summer Music is expected to start in early August and run until the end of September. The application deadline for artists was January 18, 2026—the final program selection will take place in spring.
As every year, the organizer is the state capital Saarbrücken (Cultural Office). The exact start date and program details will be announced in July 2026 on saarbruecken.de/sommermusik.
The 2026 program is expected to be published in July 2026.
