Largest Christmas market in Saarland with the Jupiter Ferris wheel and ice rink
As the days grow shorter and the first Advent lights begin to shine, the most important pre-Christmas season begins in Saarbrücken: The Saarbrücken Christmas Market is the largest Christmas market in Saarland and one of the most traditional markets in the tri-border region of Saarland-Lorraine-Luxembourg. From November 17 to December 23, the Saarbrücken Tourist Association, together with numerous stall operators, transforms the city center into an accessible Christmas city.
The festival grounds extend over two central axes: Bahnhofstraße with its fairy lights and Christmas stalls, and St. Johanner Markt with its historic facades, the magnificent Stengel fountain, and St. Johann Basilica as the perfect backdrop. Around 80 stalls line the route, offering Christmas decorations, gifts, mulled wine, gingerbread, crêpes, and of course, the Saarland specialties Lyoner and Schwenker.
The hallmark of the Saarbrücken Christmas Market is the Jupiter Ferris Wheel, towering high above Bahnhofstraße. From the enclosed, heated gondolas, a fantastic panoramic view opens up over the festively illuminated Saarbrücken — with clear visibility, even across to Forbach in neighboring France. A ride that attracts thousands every year.
Right next to the Ferris wheel, the sustainable ice rink on Bahnhofstraße invites you for a skate. Unlike traditional ice rinks, it operates without an energy-intensive cooling system — an environmentally conscious innovation that has been adopted by several German cities in recent years. Skate rental and practice areas for children are available.
A charming highlight for children: The flying Santa Claus hovers over the market daily — a show attraction with a lift that regularly draws eyes upward. On Kids' Wednesday, the children's carousels and the flying Santa Claus are half price.
On December 20, 2025, the opening hours will be extended until 10 PM — Saarbrücken's city center shops will open for the traditional Late Night Shopping. Another special feature is the photo booth, a cabin with a Christmas backdrop where visitors can take their selfies.
Anyone visiting the Christmas Market should take time for Saarbrücken: the Ludwigskirche as a baroque gem, Saarbrücken Castle with its modern extension, Stiftskirche St. Arnual, and the Saarstrand promenade invite exploration. The city is small enough for a day trip but culturally rich enough for an extended weekend.
The 2026 edition runs from Tuesday, November 17 to Wednesday, December 23, 2026 — six weeks of Christmas market in the heart of the state capital.
Opening hours daily 11 AM–9 PM, on December 20 until 10 PM for the traditional Late Night Shopping. Application deadline for stall operators is April 30, 2026.
The full program with special events will be announced from October 2026 at christkindlmarkt-sb.de.
