Schützenfest Rüthen — Sauerland Tradition on the Wednesday after Pentecost
If you want to experience the South Westphalian Sauerland in its most festive mode, the Schützenfest of the JSV Rüthen is an authentic, locally rooted summer event. The Hellweg small town of Rüthen (around 11,000 inhabitants) in the Soest District has a particularly strong shooting tradition: The St. Hubertus Bruderschaft der Bürgerschützen Rüthen 1447 e.V. is one of the oldest shooting fraternities in Germany; its founding year, 1447, appears on all club documents. The St. Sebastianus Jungschützenverein (JSV) is the younger branch of the club, dedicated specifically to up-and-coming marksmen — and hosts its own three-day Schützenfest every June.
Date 2026 — 13 to 15 June
The JSV's Schützenfest will take place in 2026 from Saturday, 13 June, to Monday, 15 June — three days of festivities on the Schützenplatz (shooting grounds) in Rüthen town. The current King and Queen (2025/2026 season) are Leon Buchholz and Sarah Farke, who will wear their crowns until the next King Bird Shooting.
What to Expect — The Typical Schedule of a JSV Schützenfest
Schützenfeste in the Sauerland and Münsterland regions follow a traditional structure, which is also implemented in Rüthen:
- Day 1 (Saturday) — Opening with festival ceremony (Festkommers) / concert, Grand Tattoo (Großer Zapfenstreich) in the evening, dancing in the festival tent with a live band
- Day 2 (Sunday) — Festival service, King Bird Shooting (Königsvogelschießen) at the bird pole (Highlight: the bird falls, a new king is proclaimed), crowning of the King and Queen, grand King's Ball in the tent in the evening
- Day 3 (Monday) — Grand parade through the old town with marching music, King's Parade (Königsparade) in front of the King and Queen, family afternoon in the tent with children's program, finale with live music
The exact program details for 2026 will be published by the JSV board closer to the date on the club's website.
King Bird Shooting — The Highlight
The central event is the King Bird Shooting (Königsvogelschießen): At the bird pole (Vogelstange) on the Schützenplatz, every JSV member steps up with the club rifle. The target is the wooden eagle — its torso, wings, crown, sceptre, and orb are shot off one by one. Whoever knocks the last piece of the eagle off the pole becomes Schützenkönig (Shooting King) for one year. The King and Queen are then ceremonially crowned, accompanied by the fraternity, and assume the representation of the JSV at festivals and shooting gatherings.
Rüthen — 'Young Town in Old Walls'
The venue is Rüthen, one of the attractive historic small towns in the Soest district. The town itself promotes the slogan 'Young Town in Old Walls' — a reference to its well-preserved medieval townscape with town walls, towers, half-timbered buildings, and the St. Nikolaus town parish church. The Schützenfeste shape the town's summer program: in addition to the JSV Schützenfest, there are other Schützenfeste organized by the Bürgerschützen and shooting clubs in the surrounding villages.
Schützen Culture in the Soest District — A UNESCO Candidate
The Schützenwesen (shooting fraternity culture) is intangible cultural heritage of Germany (UNESCO Federal List) — and no region in Germany cultivates it as intensely as the Sauerland, Hellweg, and Münsterland. The fact that a small town like Rüthen has two active shooting clubs, the Bürgerschützenbruderschaft from 1447 and the JSV, is typical and an expression of this particularly strong club culture. The JSV festival is one of the highlights of the regional shooting calendar.
