6 km wine hike along the Saale with 30+ vintners — Pentecost in one of Europe's northernmost wine-growing regions
The Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region is one of Germany's best-known small wine-growing areas and also Europe's northernmost classic wine region. Its origins date back over 1000 years — wine has been cultivated on the sunny slopes of the Saale since the Middle Ages. The Saale-Wine Mile transforms this history into a convivial six-kilometer experience once a year: at Pentecost, thousands of visitors hike from Bad Kösen to Roßbach along the Saale riverbank, past over 30 wine stands where regional vintners serve their wines — from Silvaner to Bacchus and Müller-Thurgau to Weißburgunder.
The route leads from the spa town of Bad Kösen (administratively part of Naumburg) downstream to Roßbach. Six kilometers, always by the water, always within sight of the vineyards — one of the most charming hiking routes in the Saale-Unstrut region. The stands are distributed so that you can have a tasting approximately every 500 meters. Admission to the stands is free; you only pay for the tastings you consume. The event is organized by the Saale-Weinmeile e.V., founded in 1999 and based in the Burgenlandkreis district. The association now unites nearly 50 member businesses from the region.
Naumburg (Saale) in the Burgenlandkreis is the historic capital of the Saale-Unstrut region — with its UNESCO World Heritage cathedral and the famous Uta sculpture, it is a cultural magnet. The Wine Mile adds a delightful component: at Pentecost, the Saale path between Bad Kösen and Roßbach transforms into an open, several-kilometer-long festival mile. Families hike, wine lovers taste, and music bands play at various stations. It's a wine and hiking festival in one — and one of Saxony-Anhalt's absolute summer classics.
As every year, the route along the Saale transforms into an open festival mile at Pentecost. Over 30 Saale-Unstrut vintners serve their best white, rosé, and red wines; local restaurateurs provide culinary accompaniments. Music bands play at several stations along the route — the atmosphere shifts between a relaxed hike and a folk festival.
The exact list of participating vintners will be published in spring 2026 on saale-weinmeile.de.
Bad Kösen has a train station on the Frankfurt–Leipzig high-speed line. Roßbach (Naumburg) is accessible by bus and car. As the route is one-way, a round trip using shuttle services (special buses or boat) is recommended.
Access to the Wine Mile is free. Tastings are paid for directly at the stands.
Over 30 winery stands + snack and food stands along the route. Bringing your own water and glasses is recommended (some stands provide tasting glasses).
Sturdy footwear and plenty of water. Six kilometers with stops can take a whole day.
