Open-Air Rock Festival at the old swimming pool in Sophiental
Rock am Kanal is a remarkable example of the power of volunteer-driven festival culture. Instead of organizing a large commercial rock festival, the Volksfest- und Kulturgemeinschaft Sophiental has established a smaller, but carefully curated event that attracts rock fans from the region every year. The personal atmosphere, the sincere dedication of the organizers, and the high quality of the invited bands make the festival an insider tip for lovers of guitar-driven live music.
The festival grounds at the old swimming pool in Sophiental are an unusual venue for a rock festival. The former bathing facility, with its water access and green space, offers an almost paradisiacal open-air backdrop. The stage is integrated into the area, catering stands and seating areas are spread across the grounds, and the water provides a special atmosphere that other rock festivals cannot offer.
The lineup traditionally consists of regional rock bands from the greater Braunschweig-Wolfsburg-Peine area. The bands cover a broad spectrum within rock: Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Indie Rock, Punk Rock, and occasionally Metal are on the program. This diversity ensures that different tastes are catered to and no festival visit is the same as the last.
During the festival, the Volksfest- und Kulturgemeinschaft provides for the well-being of visitors with beer, cocktails, bratwurst, fries, and other food. Prices are deliberately kept moderate to maintain a low entry threshold. This mix of good music, fair catering, and a relaxed open-air atmosphere is the recipe for success of Rock am Kanal.
Behind the festival is Uwe Czura, who holds the organizational reins as the central contact person. This personal connection to the village community is a key factor in its success and makes Rock am Kanal more than just another rock festival.
For over ten hours, Rock am Kanal offers a concentrated open-air rock session. Several bands alternate on stage, the audience enjoys live music, sun, and water at the old swimming pool.
The location by the old swimming pool with water access and green space gives the festival a special atmosphere. Seating, sunshine, and good music create a harmonious blend.
The exact 2026 lineup will be published by the Volksfest- und Kulturgemeinschaft Sophiental in spring 2026. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years with regional rock bands from the greater Braunschweig-Wolfsburg-Peine area.
