Medieval Christmas romance along the historic city wall between Johannistor and Pulverturm
The Historic Christmas Market in Jena is consistently designed as a medieval market with a Christmas theme. The entire market ensemble — stalls, lighting, staging — is in a medieval style. Instead of plastic carousels, there are wooden huts, instead of standard mulled wine grills, open fire baskets burn, and instead of pop background music, hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, and shawms play. This atmospheric clarity makes the market a hidden gem for all those who have had enough of the usual Christmas market hustle and bustle.
The market uses the area along the historic city wall between the Johannistor (one of Jena's former city gates) and the Pulverturm (a preserved defensive tower of the medieval city fortifications). This backdrop is unique in the state of Thuringia: only a few cities have preserved their medieval city wall remains in such a way that they can be used as a festive backdrop. The Pulverturm serves as the architectural landmark of the market, and the Johannistor as the entrance portal — those who enter the market pass through a real medieval city gate.
The distribution of stalls follows the medieval market tradition: no mass-produced goods, but crafts and handicrafts. You will find pottery, blacksmith work, leather goods, carved wooden figures, medieval jewelry, and hand-poured candles. The catering follows similar principles: mead instead of mulled wine (or in addition), stick bread over an open fire, spit-roasted pork, medieval baked goods. The gastronomic offer is therefore explicitly thematic and not just an accessory.
With over 110,000 inhabitants, Jena is the second-largest city in Thuringia and one of the three major university cities in the state (alongside Erfurt and Weimar). The Friedrich Schiller University — founded in 1558 — shapes the cityscape, as does the high-tech industry (Carl Zeiss, Jenoptik, Schott). This mix of an old university, modern industry, and medieval urban substance makes Jena one of the most exciting cities in Central Germany. The Historic Christmas Market clearly focuses on the medieval identity — complementing the much larger, more secular Jena Christmas Market on the market square.
The market is not open continuously but on the Advent weekends — a deliberate concentration that preserves the atmosphere and the workload of the showmen. On weekdays, it opens in the afternoon from 3 p.m., and on weekends from 11 a.m. This clearly distinguishes it from the main Christmas market, which is open daily.
From November 26th to December 13th, 2026, the Historic Christmas Market will once again open its gate — the Johannistor — and transform the area along the medieval city wall into a medieval Christmas world. Wooden stalls of merchants, open fire baskets for lighting and catering, torches along the paths, and hurdy-gurdy music shape the atmosphere.
The market is open on weekdays from 3:00 PM (Monday–Thursday) and on weekends from 11:00 AM (Friday–Sunday). Admission is free.
