Rheingau Riesling and Pinot Noir on the historic market square
Rüdesheim am Rhein is the most famous town in Hesse's Rheingau, one of Germany's most renowned wine-growing regions. The town lies on the bend of the Rhine, where the river takes its great curve towards Cologne, and is surrounded by steep vineyards that reach right down to the water. Anyone who wants to get to know the Rheingau and its Riesling cannot bypass Rüdesheim – this is especially true for the traditional Weinfest (wine festival) in mid-August.
The Rüdesheimer Weinfest has an over 80-year tradition and is one of the oldest wine festivals in Germany. It is not just a town folk festival, but also a genuine showcase for Rüdesheim's vintners, who present their wines here with great ambition. The motto 'Summer of Riesling' emphasizes this professional dimension: the Rüdesheimer Weinfest is not just about drinking, but also about tasting and understanding.
Over the five festival days, around 13 Rüdesheim wineries open their stalls in the market square, offering over 200 different wines for tasting. Among them are the wineries Altenkirch, König, and Dr. Nägler. The focus is on Riesling, the flagship of the Rheingau, complemented by Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and some experimental rarities – Rosé, Weissburgunder, sparkling wines.
The venue is the historic market square in Rüdesheim's old town, framed by half-timbered facades and old plane trees that provide shade in midsummer. This location is part of the experience: those tasting wine here are not sitting on an interchangeable festival meadow, but in the middle of one of the most beautiful old towns on the Middle Rhine, with a view of the church spire and the slopes of the Rüdesheimer Berg in the background.
The musical program starts on Friday afternoon and runs daily until late in the evening. The genres alternate between brass music (traditional Rüdesheim bands) and rock/pop cover bands. This mix appeals to a multi-generational audience: regular guests from older generations, tourists, and younger wine lovers all find their mood.
The festival culminates on Monday with a traditional Rhineland evening featuring local artists and cultural figures. This concluding tradition maintains the festival as more than just a tourist event and gives the final day a special atmosphere.
Visitors to the wine festival have some of the most famous Rhine tourist attractions in close proximity: the Niederwald Monument high above Rüdesheim, accessible by the historic cable car that glides through the vineyards; the Drosselgasse with its historic wine taverns; and the Rhine itself with boat trip options to the Loreley region.
The 2026 edition follows the traditional five-day format. As in the over 80 previous years, the wineries Altenkirch, König, Dr. Nägler, and other Rüdesheim houses will open their stalls under the plane trees in the market square.
Free admission. Wine prices per glass at the winery stalls, typically €3–€6 per 'Schoppen' (large glass). Food at the catering stands at usual festival prices.
By train: Rüdesheim am Rhein station on the Frankfurt–Koblenz line, from there a 10-minute walk to the market square. By car: A66 exit Eltville or B42 along the Rhine, parking on the outskirts of town. By ferry: Rhine passenger ferry from Bingen.
Daily from noon until late in the evening. From August 13th to 17th, 2026 (Thu–Mon).
Free admission. Wine and food prices at the winery stalls.
For systematic Riesling tasting: visit on Thursday or Friday during the day, fewer crowds. For atmosphere: Saturday evening with a live band. Highly recommended: take the cable car to the Niederwald Monument for a view of Rüdesheim and the wine festival from above.
