Colorful kites, LED show, and fireworks in the spa park during the Allgäu summer
Roßhaupten is located in Ostallgäu on the Forggensee lake, with views of the Tannheim Mountains and Neuschwanstein Castle. The community's spa park offers an open meadow area perfect for kite flying: stable updrafts, plenty of space, and no disruptive tall buildings nearby. This is exactly where the kite festival takes place every summer — organized by the Rutka family and Drachenbox from Biberach.
Over the two festival days, delta kites, box kites, 3D models, and stunt kites ascend into the Allgäu sky. The open flying is intentionally kept accessible: anyone who brings their own kite can fly it. Those who don't have one can buy one directly at the Drachenbox stand on-site or rent ground winders. Defective kites are repaired on-site.
A candy-dropping airship kite flies over the meadow, showering sweets — the most popular program item for young guests. Directly next door is the adventure playground with a zip line and a large slide, and the mini-golf course is also nearby.
When dusk falls on Saturday evening, the highlight of the kite festival begins: illuminated LED kites circle over the spa park, followed by fireworks. The combination of animated light kites, the mountain panorama, and the quiet Allgäu night is an experience in itself.
Roßhaupten is part of the Ostallgäu district in Bavaria and, with Forggensee lake, the fifth-largest lake in Bavaria, it's a popular holiday destination. The kite festival fits perfectly into this atmosphere — relaxed, family-friendly, outdoors. Food, drinks, coffee, and cake are available at the kiosk, and dogs on leashes are welcome.
Over the weekend, the meadow in the spa park transforms into a sky full of kites — delta, box, 3D, and stunt. Drachenbox from Biberach will be on-site with a stand and repair service. The highlight on Saturday evening is the light kite dance followed by fireworks. Sunday focuses more on families and children, complemented by ground winders and mini-golf.
