Advent magic in the baroque castle courtyard at the foot of the Taunus
Bad Homburg Castle, the former residence of the Landgraves of Hessen-Homburg and later the summer residence of the Prussian imperial family, provides arguably the most spectacular backdrop for a Christmas market in the Rhine-Main region. In the castle courtyard and along the surrounding paths, a historic market village emerges during Advent, contributing to Bad Homburg's reputation as a "Christmas City". The market is part of a larger Christmas City concept (19.11.2026–10.01.2027) that encompasses the entire city center.
What sets the Romantic Christmas Market apart from others: The selection of exhibitors is deliberately curated. Over 70 stalls bring together regional arts and crafts, traditional manufactories, and culinary providers from the Taunus and Rhine-Main region. Glassblowers, woodcarvers, potters, and jewelry designers present their work alongside mulled wine stands, bratwurst stalls, potato pancakes, crêpes, and sweet specialties. You won't find mass-produced goods here – the organizers see the market as a counter-program to interchangeable big-city Christmas markets.
For children, there is a historic carousel and a small, real steam train that circles at the foot of the White Tower – the castle's most distinctive structure, with roots dating back to the 12th century. Walking live acts stroll through the market alleys on Fridays and Saturdays, providing musical accompaniment with classic Christmas carols and acoustic arrangements.
Unlike many large German Christmas markets that are open continuously for several weeks, the Romantic Christmas Market deliberately limits itself to the four Advent weekends. This concentration preserves the festive and contemplative character and prevents market routine. Each weekend features its own program of concerts, readings, and performances in the castle and the adjacent castle church.
Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, situated on the southern slope of the Taunus with views of the Frankfurt skyline, is one of Germany's most traditional spa towns. In the 19th century, the town was an international fashionable spa with its own casino (the casino company is still a sponsor of the market today) and a meeting place for European aristocracy. This glamorous tradition is also reflected in the character of the castle Christmas market, which deliberately focuses on quality and atmosphere rather than mass appeal.
The market is part of the larger Christmas City Bad Homburg (19.11.2026–10.01.2027), which complements the castle market with a varied program of concerts, theater, children's activities, and church services throughout the city center. Applications for exhibitors were accepted until May 4, 2026.
