Grand Market of Roman Antiquity in the UNESCO Limes Fort above Bad Homburg
The Saalburg above Bad Homburg is an archaeological highlight of the Taunus region: a Roman cohort fort from the 2nd century, rebuilt between 1898 and 1907 on its original foundations – making it the world's most completely reconstructed Roman fort. Since 2005, as part of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is precisely on this site that the Roman Market takes place every spring: traders, craftspeople, and reenactors transform the inner courtyard and the grounds in front of the fort into a walkable market scene from Roman times.
At the Roman Market, craft and trade stalls fill the fort square: shoemakers, cosmeticians, bone carvers, tablet weavers, and ceramic artists work before the eyes of visitors, explaining ancient techniques. A Roman doctor demonstrates ancient medicine — from surgical instruments to medicinal herbs. The 4th Vindeliker Cohort sets up its Roman camp on the grounds and demonstrates the drills, weaponry, and daily life of a Roman auxiliary soldier several times a day.
The Roman Market is part of a busy year of events at the fort. On May 2nd and 3rd, the themed day "Romans Everywhere" takes place with the Vindelici Roman camp, followed by the activity day "More Than Bread and Circuses" on May 24th and 25th, featuring Roman cuisine and gladiator fights. In May and late summer, exclusive Roman Evenings (6:30 PM – 10:30 PM) offer guided tours, food, and reenactments in the evening atmosphere of the fort.
During the Roman Market, hourly guided tours of the fort are offered, with separate tours for children. The Taberna, the museum restaurant, serves dishes based on Roman recipes — boiled eggs in pine nut sauce, lentils with coriander, or a glass of Mulsum (spiced honey wine).
The fort is located about 4 km north of Bad Homburg, in the Taunus mountains, directly on the Limes hiking trail. It was occupied by a 500-strong auxiliary cohort from around 135 to 260 AD, securing the Limes against Germanic tribes. Today, it is an archaeological park and research station of the Hessian State Museum.
The 2026 edition takes place on a weekend in early May. It is embedded within the entire "Roman Spring" at Saalburg: preparatory themed days on May 2nd–3rd ("Romans Everywhere") and follow-up programming at the end of May with gladiators and Roman cuisine.
