ROHKUNSTBAU 31 — “The Art of Transgression”
31st international art exhibition at Altdöbern Castle, Lausitz
2026
About Rohkunstbau 31
Rohkunstbau 31 — edition 2026
The nearly five-month duration allows visitors to experience the exhibition between summer and autumn—and potentially visit multiple times to allow individual works to resonate. The themes are current: How do we transgress societal boundaries (migration, identity)? How do AI and digital worlds change our self-perception? How do artists push the boundaries of their practice?
The opening on June 13, 2026, starting at 3:30 PM, is a must-attend event for the German-speaking art scene—opening reception talks, meeting artists, followed by the exhibition viewing. Those traveling from Berlin or Cottbus often combine the vernissage with a weekend in the Lausitz region: Spreewald tours, Senftenberg Lake, Cottbus.

Rohkunstbau — Castle Art Since 1994
Rohkunstbau is an institution for contemporary art in Eastern Germany. Since 1994, the association has organized annual summer exhibitions in Brandenburg castles, inviting international and national artists with a decidedly curatorial ambition. Rotating venues (Schloss Groß Leuthen, Schloss Lieberose, now Altdöbern) and changing themes keep the format vibrant. The 31st edition in 2026 will feature 16 international artists.
“The Art of Transgression” — The 2026 Theme
Curator Christoph Tannert (Berliner Künstlerhaus Bethanien, long-time curator on the Berlin art scene) developed the concept for the 31st edition around the idea of transformation: How does the new emerge? How do we transgress societal, technological, and artistic boundaries? The works explore social change, human connections, technological innovation, digital transformation, and artistic strategies.
Artists 2026
Among the 16 invited artists are Silvina Der Meguerditchian (Argentina/Germany), Johan Grimonprez (Belgium), Manaf Halbouni (Syria/Germany), Paloma Varga Weisz (Spain/Germany), and other international positions. The selection reflects the festival's global reach and high thematic relevance.
Altdöbern Castle — A Venue Steeped in History
Altdöbern Castle in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district, an 18th-century Baroque water castle, offers perfect exhibition conditions with its restored interiors and park grounds. The opening will take place on June 13, 2026, at 3:30 PM (the castle opens for visitors from 2 PM).
