„Young Knights and Castle Dragons“ — Jousting tournament at the largest reconstructed hilltop castle in West Germany
The Ritterspiele Schloss Burg (Castle Burg Jousts) bring medieval atmosphere to one of North Rhine-Westphalia's most spectacular castle backdrops with the spectacle „Young Knights and Castle Dragons“ in May 2026. On five days — Thursday, May 14 (Ascension Day), and on the weekends of May 16, 23, 24, and 25, 2026 — the Georgs Knights perform three times daily at 11:00 AM, 1:30 PM, and 4:00 PM.
The play „Young Knights and Castle Dragons“ combines knightly duels, sword fighting, medieval storytelling, and audience participation. Young spectators are involved in the plot — whether as squires, advisors to the king, or dragon hunters. The stage spectacle is complemented by jugglers, jesters, and musicians in the castle courtyard. The accompanying small medieval market offers craft stalls, culinary specialties, and blacksmith demonstrations.
Schloss Burg sits enthroned 200 meters above the Wupper in the Solingen district of Burg and is the largest reconstructed hilltop castle in West Germany. The ancestral seat of the Counts of Berg was built in the 12th century, destroyed in the Napoleonic Wars, and rebuilt starting in 1890. Today, it is a museum, event venue, and a tourist landmark of the Bergisches Land region. The cable car from Burg-Unterburg leads directly to the castle gate — an experience in itself.
The Georgs Knights are a professional knightly and show troupe specializing in historical performances and medieval spectacles. Their repertoire ranges from realistic sword fights and staged jousting tournaments to family-oriented shows like „Young Knights and Castle Dragons“ that involve the audience. They tour throughout Germany to castles, palaces, and medieval markets.
Solingen is an independent city in the Bergisches Land region of North Rhine-Westphalia with around 160,000 inhabitants. Known worldwide as the City of Blades — Solingen has been the center of German cutlery and knife production for centuries (WMF, Henckels, Wüsthof). The historic district of Burg is located in the south of the city in the Wupper valley, with Schloss Burg as its tourist magnet.
Those visiting the Ritterspiele in May can extend their stay: on May 29–30 and on June 18, rappelling from the 28-meter tower will be offered (€85 per person, ages 10+). Rock and classical concerts will follow in June. Guided castle tours, herb walks, and family tours are available year-round.
The 2026 edition expands the performance days to five — Ascension Day plus two weekends — thus offering several dates for Pentecost travelers, bridge-day trippers, and families from the Bergisches Land. The „Young Knights and Castle Dragons“ format is tailored for children aged 4+ and families — the sword fights are staged, without real violence.
Each performance lasts approximately 60 minutes. Booking via schlossburg.de is recommended.
Tickets: Adults €7, Children (ages 3–15) €5. Castle museum admission separate. Discount for historical costumes.
By car: A1 exit Wermelskirchen, then B229 to Burg-Unterburg. Parking in Unterburg, from there take the cable car or walk up to the castle. By bus: Line 683 or 686 from Solingen Hauptbahnhof to Burg-Höhscheid or Unterburg.
