Mowgli, Baloo, and Shere Khan under Germany's highest railway bridge — free symphony concert on July 16, 2026
The annual Open-Air Concert of the Bergische Symphoniker in Brückenpark Müngsten is one of the most atmospheric concerts in the region: the venue is not a concert hall, but the park-like meadow directly under the Müngsten Bridge — at 107 meters, Germany's highest railway bridge and a landmark of the Bergisches Land region. The historic steel structure from 1897 spans the Wupper river and connects the cities of Solingen, Remscheid, and Wuppertal — the famous 'Bergisches Städtedreieck' (Bergisch Triangle of Cities) in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The 2026 concert is dedicated to the music of The Jungle Book — with Mowgli, Baloo, and Shere Khan at its center. Arrangements of the film music by Richard and Robert Sherman ('The Bare Necessities', 'I Wan'na Be Like You') are expected to be performed, interspersed with classical symphony pieces with a 'jungle connection' or animal motifs. The format is explicitly intended for families: children are allowed to move around, sing along, and sit on the grass. The start is scheduled for 7 PM — still light in midsummer, becoming almost twilight towards the end, creating a particularly beautiful atmosphere under the bridge.
The Bergische Symphoniker is the joint orchestra of the cities of Remscheid and Solingen and is one of the traditional ensembles of North Rhine-Westphalia. With concert evenings at the Theater und Konzerthaus Solingen, the Teo Otto Theater Remscheid, and at open-air events in the region, the orchestra cultivates both classical repertoire and crossover-friendly formats. The Open Air in Brückenpark Müngsten is part of the 'Stadtteilkonzerte' (Neighborhood Concerts) series.
The Brückenpark Müngsten is located in the Wupper valley and is a recreational area jointly maintained by the cities of Solingen, Remscheid, and Wuppertal. The park was redesigned in 2006 for the NRW State Garden Show (Regionale 2006) and offers hiking trails, a suspension ferry (Müngstener Brückenpark) across the Wupper, playgrounds, and precisely the festival meadow where the symphony concert takes place. Visitors can combine a walk with a concert — and listen to a performance under the striking steel arch that blends a symphony evening with nature and the industrial history of the Bergisches Land.
The free admission is noteworthy: the concert is funded by Kulturmanagement Solingen, the Theater und Konzerthaus Solingen, and sponsorships. The open-air format is weather-dependent — in case of heavy rain or thunderstorms, the event will be canceled.
