Whitsun Monday at the foot of the Ochsenkopf
The Waldhausfest on Whitsun Monday is one of the annual highlights in Mehlmeisel, a small community in the Bayreuth district in the middle of the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park. The venue is the Waldhaus Mehlmeisel, a forest information center with an adjoining wildlife park below the Ochsenkopf.
What's on offer at the Waldhausfest
In front of the Waldhaus, there's a lively atmosphere with market stalls, demonstrations, and a casual program centered around forest and tradition. The culinary offerings range from regional delicacies from Upper Franconia to coffee and cake, as well as beer and lemonade. Children can observe wild animals in the wildlife park – red deer, wild boar, lynx, otters, and more – and participate in hands-on activities.
In the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park
The Waldhaus is nestled in the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park, one of Bavaria's most original low mountain landscapes. Whitsun Monday is an ideal day to combine a visit to the Waldhausfest with a hike – perhaps to the Ochsenkopf summit or along one of the numerous themed trails around Mehlmeisel.
Tradition in the Bayreuth District
In Catholic-influenced Upper Franconia, Whitsun Monday has always been a day for outings and village festivals. The Waldhausfest embraces this tradition, focusing on knowledge about forests, wildlife, and nature conservation – a concept that has shaped the Waldhaus Mehlmeisel for years.
