One of South Thuringia's most popular open-air festivals since 1952 — a four-day Pentecost festival at the Waldfestplatz, nicknamed «kleines Woodstock».
The Waldfest Queienfeld is one of South Thuringia's oldest and most endearing open-air festivals. Since 1952, the festival has been held every year at Pentecost on the Waldfestplatz near the Lutherlinde — nestled in the forest, far from urban hustle and bustle, with the charm of a small festival under the trees. Hence the affectionate nickname «kleines Woodstock». In 2026, the festival runs from Friday, May 22nd to Whit Monday, May 25th.
For decades, the festival has been organized by the Hurra-Club Queienfeld — a community association that maintains the festival grounds, sets up the festival tent, books bands, and organizes the entire weekend with volunteer helpers. The generation that started the festival in 1952 has long since passed on the torch — today, children and grandchildren carry on this tradition. The change of generations is part of its identity: mothers and daughters, fathers and sons work behind the bar together.
The festival program follows the classic Pentecost weekend structure: Friday opening with a live band, Saturday main concert evening with a larger lineup, Pentecost Sunday family day and morning pint (Frühschoppen), Pentecost Monday winding down. The live bands come from South Thuringia and Franconia; the musical spectrum ranges from Schlager and party music to rock covers and acoustic sets. The festival tent, food stalls, and beer garden under the trees define the ambiance.
The district of Queienfeld belongs to the municipality of Grabfeld in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district (state of Thuringia), right on the Bavarian border. The Grabfeld is a fertile high plain between the Rhön, Thuringian Forest, and Main Valley — a region with its own distinct identity and strong community structures. Directions: A71 exit Meiningen-Nord, then L1140/L2624.
The Pentecost weekend in 2026 falls on May 22nd-25th — the traditional date for the Waldfest. Four days of programming, from Whit Friday to Whit Monday, with the usual mix of live music, festival tent atmosphere, children's and family program, and an extended morning pint (Frühschoppen) on Pentecost Sunday.
Detailed program available during the festival week via the Hurra-Club Queienfeld.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Food and drinks in the festival tent and at the stalls are at market prices. The Hurra-Club Queienfeld runs the festival on a voluntary basis — proceeds go towards maintenance and programming.
