Wine and Kirchweih (Kerwe) market on the fourth September weekend in the Rettigheim district of Mühlhausen
The Rettigheimer Wein- und Kerwemarkt is part of the series of Kraichgau autumn wine festivals that follow one another in the weeks around the grape harvest in the wine-growing communities of the southern Kraichgau. The municipality of Mühlhausen organises the festival annually on the fourth September weekend — followed by the Mühlhausen Wine Festival on the first October weekend and preceded by the Tairnbach Wine Festival on the third September weekend. Three districts, three weekends — a concentrated Kraichgau wine festival tour.
The Kerwe (Kirchweih) is a traditional South German folk festival that dates back to the consecration of the local parish church. In Rettigheim, this has evolved over centuries into a festival with three components: firstly, the religious Kerwe tradition (festival service, festival parade), secondly, the wine festival with wine served by local clubs, and thirdly, the craft market with stalls. This combination of religion, wine, and market is typical of the Kraichgau and Palatinate wine regions.
The Kraichgau is a South German wine region between Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, and Heilbronn. The calcareous loess soils produce elegant, mineral wines — especially Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, and Schwarzriesling. Rettigheim, Tairnbach, and Mühlhausen are classic Kraichgau wine-growing communities with their own local vintners and wine cooperatives. At the Rettigheimer Wein- und Kerwemarkt, their wines are served directly from the club stalls and vintner wagons.
Rettigheim is one of the districts of the municipality of Mühlhausen in the Kraichgau (Rhein-Neckar district, state of Baden-Württemberg, district code 08226). The municipality of Mühlhausen consists of the three districts Mühlhausen, Tairnbach, and Rettigheim — each with its own identity, history, and festivals. Rettigheim has a classic Kraichgau village profile with half-timbered buildings, small streets, and a manageable population.
On the fourth September weekend of 2026 — probably from September 25th to 27th — the Rettigheim district of the municipality of Mühlhausen (Kraichgau) invites you to the annual Wine and Kerwemarkt in the village centre. As is traditional, the festival combines the Kerwe tradition (Kirchweihfest) with a wine festival and a craft market — three components that characterise the South German autumn festival format.
Local clubs — music clubs, sports clubs, fire brigade, church communities — run their wine and food stalls. The wines come from the surrounding Kraichgau wineries: Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Weissburgunder, Spätburgunder, Schwarzriesling. Accompanied by Swabian-Kraichgau specialities and sweet temptations like Apfelküchle and Plundergebäck.
