About Residenztage Bayreuth

The Residenztage Bayreuth & Sanspareil is a three-day cultural festival organized by the Bavarian Palace Department, bringing the world of Margravine Wilhelmine to life once a year. Three spectacular venues are at the heart of the event: the UNESCO World Heritage Margravial Opera House, the New Palace Bayreuth with its Court Garden, and the Sanspareil Rock Garden in Wonsees (Kulmbach district) with Zwernitz Castle and the Morningland Pavilion. Concerts, theatre, dance, guided tours, workshops, hands-on activities, and family programs connect the three locations into a Baroque experience weekend. The 20th anniversary edition in 2026 focused on the motto »Everything Seems Natural« — an allusion to the Wilhelminian aesthetic of nature in the Rock Garden.

The World of Margravine Wilhelmine

Bayreuth is not just about Wagner—the city owes its architectural treasures primarily to Margravine Wilhelmine of Bayreuth (1709–1758), sister of Frederick the Great and a patron of the arts at the Bayreuth court. Under her patronage, the Margravial Opera House (now a UNESCO World Heritage site), the Eremitage, the New Palace with its Court Garden, and—as a summer residence—the Sanspareil Rock Garden in Wonsees on the edge of the Franconian Forest were created. The Residenztage annually showcases the Margravial world.

Three Locations, Three Atmospheres

The Margravial Opera House in the heart of Bayreuth has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2012—Europe's most beautiful Baroque opera house, preserved in its original state since 1748. The New Palace with its Court Garden houses Wilhelmine's most important living quarters, with their remarkable stucco ceilings and chinoiserie wall hangings. The Sanspareil Rock Garden (approx. 30 km northeast of Bayreuth, municipality of Wonsees, Kulmbach district 09477) is one of Europe's most peculiar gardens: a rock landscape garden with a theatre grotto, the 'Morningland Pavilion,' and the medieval Zwernitz Castle.

Program Structure

Concerts by the Munich Radio Orchestra or other renowned ensembles in the Opera House, behind-the-scenes tours, access to normally closed rooms in the Herrenflügel of the New Palace, walks through the Rock Garden focusing on geology and ecology, theatre in the Ruinen Theater, Baroque workshops (dance, gilding, embroidery), treasure hunts, and discovery trails for families — the program ranges from high culture to playful participation.

The Bavarian Palace Department as Organizer

The Bavarian Palace Department (Bayerische Schlösser-, Garten- und Seenverwaltung) organizes the Residenztage as an annual flagship event for its Bayreuth properties. They combine content-driven education with a festive atmosphere — a modern way to convey living cultural heritage.

Anniversary 2026 — »Everything Seems Natural«

The 20th edition in 2026 was themed around the Wilhelminian quote »Everything Seems Natural« — an allusion to how the Margravine understood the Sanspareil Rock Garden as a 'natural' staging, even though it was artistically composed down to the last detail. The Morningland Pavilion in Sanspareil, freshly restored and accessible again for the first time in 2026, featured a new permanent exhibition.

Residenztage Bayreuth — edition 2026

The 20th anniversary edition of the Residenztage Bayreuth & Sanspareil took place from May 15 to 17, 2026, under the motto »Everything Seems Natural«. At three venues — the UNESCO World Heritage Margravial Opera House, the New Palace Bayreuth with its Court Garden, and the Sanspareil Rock Garden in Wonsees — the Bavarian Palace Department offered concerts, guided tours, theatre, dance, and hands-on activities. A special highlight was the newly restored Morningland Pavilion in Sanspareil with its new permanent exhibition.

20 Years of Residenztage — The 2026 Anniversary

From May 15 to 17, 2026, the Bavarian Palace Department celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Residenztage. The motto »Everything Seems Natural« echoed the Wilhelminian concept of artfully staged nature, as exemplified in the Sanspareil Rock Garden.

The highlight was the reopening of the freshly restored Morningland Pavilion in Sanspareil with a new permanent exhibition. The Munich Radio Orchestra performed the opening concert in the Margravial Opera House. Throughout the three days, guided tours, workshops, and family programs ran concurrently at the three venues.
