Summer tour of the New Jewish Cemetery with Art Nouveau mourning hall
The City of Worms organizes several public tours of the New Jewish Cemetery in Hochheim during the warmer half of the year. After the kick-off on May 31, the summer edition follows on July 26; further dates in late summer and autumn are possible and will be announced in the event calendar.
The New Jewish Cemetery in Worms-Hochheim is not just a burial place, but also a remarkable architectural ensemble. The mourning hall in the Darmstadt Art Nouveau style is considered a rare testimony to Jewish bourgeois sacred architecture of that era. It was built at a time when the Jewish community was closely linked to the bourgeois self-image of Worms' urban society.
In addition to architecture and burial culture, the summer tour emphasizes social history: Which families are buried here? What fates are hidden behind the inscriptions? How did the Jewish community in Worms develop in the period between industrialization and the Shoah? The connections to Worms' industrial and commercial history will be addressed, as will the ruptures and losses of the 20th century.
With the inscription of the SchUM sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2021, Jewish Worms has gained international recognition. The Hochheim tour adds an important perspective to this world heritage site – because the history of the Jewish community of Worms does not end in the High Middle Ages but extends to the Shoah and beyond.
The summer tour on July 26, 2026, takes advantage of the long summer days for a carefully designed walk. The tour is conducted on foot, with several stations deepening the exploration of architecture and history.
The summer edition is the counterpart to the spring tour on May 31, 2026. Both dates can be booked independently.
