Village Fair in the Franconian Switzerland
The Großenhüler Dorfplatz-Kerwa is the annual Kirchweih in the district of Großenhül, part of the market town of Wonsees in the Kulmbach district. It stands in the lively tradition of Franconian village fairs, which are firmly anchored in the annual cycle of village communities in the Franconian Switzerland. It is organized by the Großenhül community in cooperation with the market town of Wonsees.
“Großenhül leuchtet!”
The Kerwa in 2026 runs under the motto “Großenhül leuchtet!” — a nod to the festively decorated and illuminated atmosphere around the village square. Over the extended weekend, locals, former residents of Großenhül, and guests from neighboring towns meet for food, music, and socializing.
Franconian Kerwa Tradition
A Franconian Kerwa thrives on its customs: hospitality with grilled sausages, Schäuferla (pork shoulder), and beer, dance and brass band music, often a Kirchweih church service, and convivial hours in the festival tent or on the illuminated village square. In many Franconian villages, the Kärwabaum (fair pole) and the “Kärwaaustanzen” (fair dancing) by the Kärwaboum and -madli (fair boys and girls) are also part of the tradition — an expression of vibrant village and club life.
Wonsees and its Districts
The market town of Wonsees is located in the north of the Franconian Switzerland in the Kulmbach district in the state of Bavaria and consists of several districts, including Großenhül. Nearby attractions include Sanspareil Castle with its rock garden and Oriental building, as well as the typical hiking and climbing regions of the Franconian Switzerland. The Großenhüler Kerwa is a down-to-earth, warm village festival that makes the community spirit of this region tangible.
