Medieval market and fairy tale program in the alleys of the Odenwald town
Reichelsheim in the Odenwald is deeply rooted in the region of the Brentano-Wunderhorn, the Lurchi stories, and Hessian legends. Since 1996, the village has celebrated its own fairy tale DNA once in autumn with the Fairy Tale and Legend Days. 2026 marks the 31st edition from October 23rd to 25th – three days during which the town transforms into a walkable fairy tale world.
The centerpiece is the Medieval Market on Saturday and Sunday in the streets and alleys of Reichelsheim. Showmen, traders, and craftspeople in historical costumes offer jewelry, leather goods, medieval food, mead, and honey wine. Blacksmiths hammer iron, spinners spin, jugglers juggle – a complete historical setting that turns the old town into a stage.
The Fairy Tale and Legend Days will be opened on Friday, October 23rd, 2026, with a ceremonial event in the Reichenberghalle. Speeches, musical contributions, and literary program points will set the mood for the weekend.
The highlight of the 31st edition is the presentation of the renowned Wildweibchen Prize on Saturday, October 24th, 2026, at 7:00 PM in the Regional Museum. The prize has been awarded for years to outstanding personalities in fairy tale literature – in 2026, for the first time to a publisher: to Anna Kindermann from Kindermann Verlag. The jury thus recognizes the central role of a children's and youth book publisher in the modern fairy tale landscape. The patron of the event is Claudia Maria Pecher, President of the German Academy for Children's and Young Adult Literature.
Throughout the weekend, there will be stage shows with storytellers, readings from the rich treasure of Hessian fairy tales, lectures on fairy tale research and folklore, as well as readings in the Regional Museum and the church. The stage program is coordinated via the event platform eveeno and the Reichelsheim Tourist Office.
