Around 100 wooden stalls in the medieval Odenwald old town
Few Christmas markets in Germany can boast a backdrop to rival that of Michelstadt. In the heart of the old town stands the historic half-timbered town hall from 1484, one of Central Europe's most iconic timber-framed buildings, with its carved oriels and characteristic open ground floor. When the Christmas market's wooden stalls are set up in front of this edifice and the lights are switched on, it creates an atmosphere that rightly draws tens of thousands of visitors to the Odenwald every year.
Unlike many modern Christmas markets with standardized rows of stalls, Michelstadt opts for the traditional wooden stall. Around 100 stands are spread not only across the market square but also along the central Braunstraße and into the narrow alleys of the old town. This creates a market stroll that reveals new perspectives: here a hidden half-timbered house, there an old church wall, always with illuminated oriels and snow-covered roofs (weather permitting).
A hallmark of the Michelstadt market is the life-sized wooden figures scattered throughout the market area. They are crafted at the local Holzfachschule Michelstadt (Michelstadt Woodworking School) – one of Germany's most traditional training centers for woodworking. The figures depict Christmas and winter stories and are popular photo opportunities.
While adults enjoy mulled wine, punch, and regional specialties, children have their own program: a historic carousel, a children's bakery where little ones can bake cookies with bakers, a puppet theater, and of course, regular visits from St. Nicholas. This family focus makes the market a popular weekend destination for families from Frankfurt as well (about a 60-minute drive).
The range of stalls is deliberately focused on quality: handmade gifts, wood carvings, glassblowing, felt designs, blacksmith art, and regional culinary specialties – from Odenwald ham and apple wines to the original Michelstadt gingerbread. The organizers keep the proportion of mass-produced goods low.
A special feature: the market is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. This concentration on five days a week keeps stallholders satisfied and ensures that a true market atmosphere prevails on opening days, rather than the typical weekday dreariness.
The 74th edition in 2026 follows the established format. The focus is on high-quality crafts, regional specialties from the Odenwald, and a rich family program. The opening takes place on Friday, November 27, with the ceremonial switching on of the Christmas lights in the market square.
