South Hesse's largest folk festival in the Odenwald – ten days of funfair, market, and SüdhessenMESSE
The Erbach Wiesenmarkt is not just any folk festival – it is the largest and most popular in South Hesse. Around half a million visitors flock to the Odenwald district town of Erbach every year during the last full week of July to celebrate, shop, and stroll through the festival grounds for ten days. An entire city of rides, market stalls, exhibition halls, and marquees springs up on approximately 60,000 square meters.
The Wiesenmarkt combines three components: the Kirmes (funfair) with over 80 amusement rides (Ferris wheel, chain carousel, roller coasters, carousels), the Krämermarkt (market) with around 120 vendors in the quieter market streets, and the SüdhessenMESSE – an established consumer exhibition featuring vehicles, agricultural and forestry technology, garden furniture, and kitchens in two halls plus 10,000 m² of outdoor space.
For the residents of Erbach and the surrounding Odenwald region, the Wiesenmarkt is simply their fifth and favorite season. Generations meet in the festival tents, families stock up on household goods at the market, and visitors travel especially from the Rhine-Main region. It is open daily from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m.
The food offerings range from classic folk festival fare – currywurst, fish rolls, crêpes, candied almonds – to specialties from Erbach's partner cities. Several festival tents and beer gardens offer live music, schlager, rock, and pop until late into the night; brass bands perform on the stages.
The Wiesenmarkt grounds are located about 1.2 kilometers (15 minutes on foot) from Erbach train station. Bus lines 4 and 50 go to the stop Erbach (Odenwald), Post, right by the festival grounds. Erbach itself is the district capital of the Odenwaldkreis and is known primarily for its castle and its ivory carving tradition.
Ten days of Wiesenmarkt with the usual program structure: Opening on Friday, July 17th, in the evening with a grand fireworks display at 10:30 p.m. The first weekend includes the parade, the riding and show jumping tournament of the Odenwald Riding Club (Saturday to Monday), and an ecumenical market service on Sunday. Wednesday marks the halftime with a children's play festival and a brilliant fireworks display by the market vendors. The second weekend traditionally culminates in the gallop and trot horse races with pari-mutuel betting and the Scooter Ball Cup in the bumper cars.
Admission to the festival grounds and the SüdhessenMESSE is free. Rides, food, and admission to the horse races are subject to charges. On Family Day (Thursday), prices are reduced on many rides.
