Roetgen's contribution to the 2026 Regional Cultural Days from March 20 to June 20, featuring a concert-reading, chamber orchestra, and top jazz duo
Roetgen is the southernmost municipality of the Städteregion Aachen, located at about 410 meters altitude on the northern edge of the Eifel and directly on the Belgian border. With just under 8,500 inhabitants, Roetgen is manageable in size but boasts a surprisingly vibrant cultural scene centered around the Bürgersaal Roetgen and the historic Evangelische Kirche. Every two years, cultural life is enhanced by the Regional Cultural Days — a three-month festival that puts the Eifel region and the Aachen city periphery on the cultural policy map.
The Regional Cultural Days are an initiative of the Städteregion Aachen (composed of the city of Aachen and its surrounding municipalities — Alsdorf, Baesweiler, Eschweiler, Herzogenrath, Monschau, Roetgen, Simmerath, Stolberg, Würselen). In 2026, the series runs from March 20 to June 20, with a decentralized program featuring events in each member municipality. Roetgen is contributing three highlights in 2026 — all in the town center, with established artists and a program that turns the rural Eifel community into a stage for nationally recognized acts.
On Saturday, May 9, 2026, Ludwig Blochberger (actor, known from film, television, radio plays) and Stefan Weinzierl (pianist, composer) will present a concert-reading of George Orwell's "1984" in the Bürgersaal Roetgen — the dystopian classic as a hybrid of reading and musical composition. Blochberger reads from the novel, while Weinzierl accompanies with live-composed piano music. A format that has established itself in recent years as one of the most original hybrids — and is sure to attract attention far beyond the Eifel in Roetgen.
On Friday, May 22, 2026, the Euregio Chamber Orchestra will perform Camille Saint-Saëns' "Carnival of the Animals" in the historic Evangelische Kirche Roetgen — the humorous classic with its 14 movements about lions, hens and roosters, turtles, elephants, kangaroos, swans, and of course, the inevitable aquarium fish. A concert especially for families with children, held in Roetgen's acoustically outstanding church.
The grand finale on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 8 PM in the Bürgersaal Roetgen will feature the accordion-saxophone top duo Vincent Peirani & Émile Parisien. These two French musicians are among Europe's most sought-after jazz acts: Peirani coaxes soundscapes from the accordion ranging from tango, jazz, and classical to improvisation, while Parisien is considered one of the most original soprano saxophonists of his generation. They have released several award-winning albums and tour worldwide. The fact that they are performing in Roetgen — rather than an Aachen concert hall — is precisely the point of the Cultural Days: top-tier programming in the Eifel municipalities.
The two central venues:
For those combining a concert visit with a day trip: The Eifel National Park begins immediately south of Roetgen, the Belgian border is 2 kilometers away, and the neighboring town of Monschau with its historic old town is 15 minutes away. The Roetgen Reservoir and the Roetgen Heath (high moor) are popular hiking destinations.
Roetgen's contribution to the three-month festival of the Städteregion Aachen, running decentrally from March to June 2026. Three distinct events: a literary-musical hybrid based on Orwell's "1984", a family-friendly chamber orchestra concert featuring the Saint-Saëns classic, and a top-tier concert with French-French jazz featuring Peirani & Parisien.
