7th Edition — Punk, Rock and Indie on the outdoor grounds of Das LEO Dorsten
Dorsten, with around 75,000 inhabitants, is the northernmost town in the district of Recklinghausen, at the transition from the Ruhr area to the Münsterland region. The town is located on the Westphalian Lippe bend, has a historic town center with half-timbered houses, and an industrial heritage primarily associated with the former Fürst Leopold colliery. After the mine closed in 2001, the area was developed into a cultural and urban district hub — today, the youth and cultural center “Das LEO” is central.
Das LEO at Fürst-Leopold-Allee 70 in Dorsten-Hervest is a municipal youth and cultural center offering concerts, workshops, theater, youth work, and an outdoor area that serves as the natural stage for the RedBalloon Festival. The colliery's industrial architecture as a backdrop, the open space, and the proximity between stage and audience define the festival's character.
The RedBalloon Festival was initiated by Das LEO to provide a stage for punk, rock, and indie bands — both from the region and nationally. The concept is clear: not a mega-festival, but a family-friendly event with a capacity for around 1,500 visitors, featuring a curated mix of youth music from the Ruhr area scene and bands from the German-European underground. 2026 marks the 7th edition.
The 2026 line-up will be announced shortly before the festival — the application phase for bands ran until October 31, 2025, and the final selection will be published in spring 2026. Previous editions featured bands like The Pighounds and Adam Bomb and the Rogers (whose last album reached number 9 on the German charts) on stage, along with numerous regional newcomers.
On Friday, July 31, 2026, doors open at 4:30 PM, show starts at 5:00 PM. On Saturday, August 1, 2026, doors open at 2:00 PM, show starts at 2:30 PM. Both days feature multiple bands in a tight schedule. On-site: stage, mixing desk, expanded food and drink area with “Rock'im'Biss” and other food stalls, beer, and non-alcoholic options.
Despite its punk-rock profile, RedBalloon remains a family-friendly festival. Children under 14 require parental accompaniment, and a valid ID is mandatory for entry according to youth protection laws. The awareness structure and the LEO staff team are experienced in assisting younger festival-goers.
By car: A 31 exit Dorsten, then follow signs for Hervest/Das LEO. Parking available in the immediate vicinity. By public transport: Dorsten-Hervest train station (RB 42 from Essen/Münster), then a 10-minute walk. Accommodation options in Dorsten or the neighboring towns of Wesel and Recklinghausen.
The 7th edition builds on the proven concept of previous years: a non-commercial festival by the youth and cultural center Das LEO, featuring a mix of Ruhr area scene and national underground bands. Family-friendly, compliant with youth protection regulations, with an expanded food and drink area.
The full line-up will be released in spring 2026. Currently available on redballoon-festival.de.
