International Film Festival on Home, Landscape, City, and Countryside at Haus Schwärzetal
Since 2003, the Provinziale has been Eberswalde's major film festival and one of the most important Brandenburg film culture events in autumn. The 23rd edition will take place from October 10 to 17, 2026, at Haus Schwärzetal, Weinbergstraße 6a. The festival specializes in films "that deal with home, landscape, city, and countryside" — a thematic field ranging from documentary stillness to animated fantasy to short film narratives.
The program is divided into four main competitions:
These are complemented by the special program "Heimatfenster", which compiles specially selected film programs on regional or thematic focuses — and by music evenings and film discussions that make the festival more than just a week of screenings.
Despite its name ("Provinziale") and its location in a small Brandenburg town, the festival attracts filmmakers from all over Europe and beyond. The Call for Entries opened on February 1, 2026 — submissions are accepted worldwide. An international jury will select the award winners in each category at the end of the festival.
Haus Schwärzetal at Weinbergstraße 6a is Eberswalde's largest cultural center and has been the festival home of the Provinziale for years. With a large cinema hall, smaller venues, and a spacious foyer for receptions and film discussions, it offers the ideal infrastructure. Travel from Berlin by regional train is uncomplicated: approx. 45 minutes.
Eberswalde, the district town of Barnim with around 40,000 inhabitants, is considered the gateway to the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve and is home to the University for Sustainable Development (HNEE). The Provinziale fits into this mix of educational, natural, and industrial city — and in October, it is the cultural flagship of the city.
The 23rd Provinziale will be held from October 10 to 17, 2026. The venue is the Haus Schwärzetal at Weinbergstraße 6a, 16225 Eberswalde.
The festival presents itself with four competitions: Short Documentary Film, Feature Documentary Film, Animated Film, and Short Film. The common thematic thread revolves around "Home, Landscape, City, and Countryside." The special program "Heimatfenster" complements the competitions with curated thematic programs.
In addition to the film program, film discussions, music evenings, and concerts are part of the festival — the Provinziale aims to create encounters, not just screenings.
The organizer is Filmfest Eberswalde e.V. Submissions for the competitions have been possible since February 1, 2026; the detailed program will be announced in the summer of 2026.
