Traditional Pentecost Marksmen's Festival in the Frankenwald since 1834
The Marksmen's and Citizens' Festival in Presseck looks back on a long tradition. The Privileged Marksmen's Society of Presseck was founded as early as 1834, and has hosted the marksmen's festival every year at Pentecost since then. Presseck is located in the Kulmbach district, in the state of Bavaria, in the picturesque Frankenwald – its location at around 600 meters altitude with a view over the low mountain range landscape gives the festival its motto "The mountain is calling".
The festival program begins on Whit Saturday at 2 p.m. with the traditional collection of the marksmen kings from the reigning monarch and a parade to the marksmen's club house. On Whit Sunday, the grand marksmen's parade through Presseck follows at 1:30 p.m., and in the evening there is live music in the festival tent. The highlight is Whit Monday with the citizens' parade at 1:30 p.m. and the eagerly awaited proclamation of the king at 6 p.m., where the new marksmen majesties – marksmen king, marksmen queen, youth king, and marksmen's leader – are ceremonially announced.
In the festival tent on the festival grounds, the marksmen serve beer from a regional brewery, complemented by Franconian delicacies: Bratwurst, Schäuferla, Krautsalat, and cakes from the marksmen's wives' bakery. The atmosphere is characterized by Franconian hospitality: down-to-earth, friendly, and with great participation from local clubs.
The proclamation of the king on Whit Monday evening is the most emotional moment of the festival. Whoever made the best shot in the preceding king's shoot will be crowned the new marksmen king or marksmen queen. This is followed by a long evening of festivities with a live band, toasting together, and speeches.
From May 23rd to 25th, 2026, the Privileged Marksmen's Society 1834 Presseck will celebrate its Pentecost marksmen's festival. The opening is on Whit Saturday at 2 p.m. with the collection of the reigning marksmen kings and a short initial parade to the marksmen's club house. Afterwards, the festival tent opens at the marksmen's club house.
On Whit Sunday, May 24th, the traditional marksmen's parade through Presseck starts at 1:30 p.m. In the evening, a live band takes the stage in the festival tent. The highlight is Whit Monday with the citizens' parade at 1:30 p.m. and the proclamation of the king at 6 p.m., where the new marksmen majesties will be announced. The tent dismantling begins on May 26th.
