The largest equestrian tournament on the island of Rügen
If you drive through the island of Rügen in early June and suddenly spot a line of horseboxes and SUVs along one of the narrow country roads, chances are high that you are on your way to Poseritz. There, in the south of the island between Bergen and Stralsund, the local Reit- und Fahrverein Poseritz e.V. has organised a tournament since 1984 that is now considered the largest of its kind on Rügen: around 27 competitions in dressage, show jumping, and driving over a long weekend.
On the main arena next to the Dörphus, the 14 show jumping competitions take place, from the lead-rein class for young riders to an M-level (1.40m) two-star competition – the tournament's "Grand Prix" jumping event. On the second arena, the 12 dressage competitions run in parallel, focusing on E, A, and L levels. In addition, there is the traditional "Kampf der Gespanne" (Battle of the Carriages), a driving competition with single and double horse teams of various breeds, to determine the "Master" of the island of Rügen. This makes Poseritz one of the few tournaments in the north that combines riding and driving sports under one roof.
The tournament is more than just a home game for the riding club: it is where the Vorpommern-Rügen Equestrian Association district championships are held in four age groups, as well as qualifiers for the VR Cup. This makes Poseritz a must-attend event for many clubs in the district, and you will find a wide range of amateur riders, club members, and ambitious young professionals at the venue.
Poseritz has around 700 inhabitants, and on tournament days, the entire community is mobilised. The Dörphus, a former schoolhouse and now a village community centre, serves as the reception area, lounge, and gastronomic hub. Local clubs take care of catering – cake buffet, bratwurst, coffee – and sometimes small show programmes invite visitors to stay in the late afternoon. Those holidaying in the south of Rügen (Garz, Putbus, Lauterbach) have an opportunity here to get a glimpse of a genuine rural equestrian tradition.
The tournament's registration for 2026 is publicly available in the Poseritz municipality's event calendar. The proven format – jumping arena, dressage arena, driving competition – will be maintained, as will the hosting of the Vorpommern-Rügen district championships. The complete competition program is traditionally published a few weeks before the tournament by the Riding and Driving Club via its official Facebook page and the platform hippothek.de.
For spectators, Saturday afternoon is particularly recommended: the highlights – the "Grand Jumping" of class M and the "Kampf der Gespanne" – usually take place alternately on the main and driving arenas.
The exact competition program for 2026 will be published by the Poseritz Riding and Driving Club a few weeks before the tournament. Based on experience, the weekend includes:
