Plön Castle — the gleaming white Renaissance above the lake
Plön Castle is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most distinctive castle complexes: a gleaming white Renaissance building, perched high above the Großer Plöner See (Great Plön Lake), overlooking the lake landscape of the Holsteinische Schweiz (Holstein Switzerland). It was built in the early 17th century as the residence of the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön. In this historically rich setting, the Plöner Schlosskonzerte have found their stage for over 40 years — an established chamber music concert series that attracts a discerning audience from the region and far beyond, year after year.
Four Concerts a Year — Four Rooms
The season is divided into four concerts, each held in a different historic room:
- Castle Chapel — the intimate space with particularly dense acoustics, ideal for chamber music classics
- Knights' Hall — the large, representative hall with a stucco ceiling, suitable for string quartet and octet ensembles
- Kulturforum — the modern event space for larger trios and quartets

Plön and Holstein Switzerland
Plön is the district town of the Plön district and the heart of Holstein Switzerland — Schleswig-Holstein's most lake-rich region, with rolling hills, forests, and over 200 lakes. The Plöner Schlosskonzerte are deliberately embedded in this landscape by the organizers: visitors traveling to Plön for a concert can combine their trip with a boat tour on the Großer Plöner See, a walk around the castle, or a stop at one of the local eateries on the market square.
More Than 40 Years of Dedication
The concert series was established in the early 1980s and has since established itself as one of Schleswig-Holstein's most important chamber music series. It attracts a loyal audience from Kiel, Lübeck, Hamburg, and all over Northern Germany, and serves as an attractive performance venue for both young and established ensembles.
