Three-day pirate adventure for families on the Sandwall — Free admission
For three days a year, the Sandwall in Wyk auf Föhr — the promenade section directly on the beach and harbor — transforms into a pirate camp. With tents, a wooden deck, pirate flags, and plenty of lighting effects, Föhr Tourism creates a family event that is one of the fixed summer highlights of the island in the district of Nordfriesland.
Instead of a classic stage program, the Pirate Spectacle focuses on interactive game stations. Anyone entering the pirate camp receives a "Pirate Booklet" to guide them through the stations. Each completed task is stamped — those who have completed all stations receive the Pirate Diploma at the end, the award for being a trained pirate:
The concept is deliberately accessible: free admission, no registration required. Families can come and go as they please — which is particularly helpful with small children. The difficulty of the game stations is chosen so that children from about 4 years of age can participate — older siblings will enjoy the more athletic stations (walk the plank, treasure hunt).
Föhr is one of the largest North Frisian islands in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. With its flat geest, thatched-roof houses, island villages, and the central island capital Wyk, Föhr is one of the most family-friendly island destinations in Northern Germany. The Sandwall in Wyk is the central location for events — a wide promenade section directly on the beach with the characteristic wooden deck.
Those who miss the spectacle in Wyk have a second chance: In the summer, a second edition takes place in the island village of Utersum — more compact, but in the same format. This way, the western island villages of Föhr also benefit from the format.
From July 21 to 23, 2026, the pirate camp on the Sandwall in Wyk auf Föhr will open its gates. Three days of game stations, pirate tattoos, treasure hunt, and the coveted pirate diploma for all who master the full program.
In August, the second edition follows in Utersum (island village on Föhr's west coast) on August 10 and 11, 2026 — more compact, but in the same format and also with free admission.
Free admission. Snacks and drinks on the Sandwall for a fee.
From the mainland by W.D.R. ferry from Dagebüll to Wyk auf Föhr (journey time approx. 45 min.). From Wyk ferry terminal to the Sandwall about 5 min. on foot. By car: to Dagebüll-Mole, public parking and ferry connection there.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. No registration required. Food and drinks available at the snack stands on the Sandwall for a fee.
Recommendation for families with small children: come as early as possible, start at the first stations — the queue gets longer in the afternoon. Plan for sunscreen and water.
