Pfingstweinfest Donnersdorf — four days of Franconian wine at Zabelstein
Donnersdorf is located in the Schweinfurt district on the southern edge of the Steigerwald Nature Park, directly at the foot of the Zabelstein. The Falkenberg location above the village is considered one of Franconia's most original wine-growing areas — Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, and Bacchus grow here on shell limestone and Keuper soil with a significant slope. The Pentecost wine festival organized by the Heimat & Wein e.V. Donnersdorf association is the flagship event for this location and, at the same time, the village's major social gathering over the Pentecost holidays.
Location and Festival Tent
The festival site is the open area on Falkensteiner Straße in Donnersdorf (postal code 97499), a few steps from the village center. The large festival tent houses the wine bar, kitchen, and stage under one roof. In good weather, guests can sit outside under chestnut trees; in case of rain, they can sit inside — the festival tent operation is weather-independent.
Wine Selection and Franconian Cuisine
Franconian wine is served from the traditional Bocksbeutel bottle, as well as the classic Donnersdorf "Schoppen" (large glass of wine). The selection includes dry Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, and smooth red wines from the region. The kitchen serves hearty Franconian specialties: Bratwurst (fried sausage), Schweinebraten (roast pork) with dumplings, homemade Schäuferla (pork shoulder) variations, and Käsespätzle (cheese noodles). The combination of simple festival tent food and high-quality Falkenberg wines is part of its character: wine here is not celebrated like in a wine bar, but drunk as it is in the wine cellars of the wine-growing villages.
Musical Program in the Festival Tent
Each festival evening has its own musical focus. The opening on Pentecost Friday features a singer-songwriter in the early evening, followed by a rock band that keeps the tent lively until late at night. Pentecost Saturday is dedicated to Franconian dialect pop bands that have a loyal fan base in the region. Pentecost Sunday opens musically in two parts: a brass band in the afternoon, and a second live band in the evening. Pentecost Monday concludes the festival with "Tanzlmusi" (dance music) and Bohemian-Bavarian sounds.
Surroundings: Falkenberg Vineyard and Wine Hikes
Those who wish to extend their festival weekend with their own walk can find hiking trails from the festival grounds through the Falkenberg vineyards up to the Zabelstein (short tour approx. 1.5 hours, longer circular route via the Falkensteiner viewpoint approx. 3 hours). Heimat & Wein e.V. organizes other wine events throughout the year — a vineyard hike in early May and the Gadenweinfest in July complement the Pentecost weekend.
