Traditional Pentecost Volksfest on the festival grounds at B101 — rides, showmen, family program
While the Schwarzenberg old town celebrates its historical identity in August with the Old Town and Edelweiss Festival, the Pentecost month of May belongs to the classic Volksfest: Four days of showmen's operations, rides, food stalls, family program — a traditional Volksfest on the festival grounds at B101. Unlike the thematic old town festival, this is not about the Middle Ages, but pure entertainment atmosphere: carousels, roller coaster, Ferris wheel, cotton candy, rubber duck fishing.
The showmen bring the usual Volksfest program: Carousels for the little ones (pony carousel, car carousel, mini roller coaster for children), rides for older ones (chain flyers, Break Dance, haunted house, medium-sized roller coaster), a Ferris wheel with a view over the Ore Mountains foothills, plus stalls with classics like shooting galleries, dart throwing, goldfish throwing, arcade games. Food stalls offer bratwurst, steak, fries, fried dough, cotton candy, crêpes, ice cream, mulled wine (even in May) and draft beer.
The Volksfest spans four days — Friday to Whit Monday. When exactly the showmen open varies (typically: Friday from afternoon, Saturday and Sunday from noon, Whit Monday from morning to late afternoon). The program suits the family audience: Pentecost is a classic family weekend, and the Volksfest in Schwarzenberg is a popular excursion destination for families from Aue, Annaberg, Zwickau, and Chemnitz.
Anyone who has been to the Old Town/Edelweiss Festival knows Schwarzenberg/Erzgeb. With around 16,000 inhabitants, a characteristic old town around Schwarzenberg Castle and St. George's Church, the town in the Erzgebirgskreis district is a popular tourist destination. Visitors to the Volksfest can combine their stay with a castle visit, a mining tour (the town is in the mining Ore Mountains), or a hike to the Fichtelberg.
The 2026 Volksfest falls on the Pentecost weekend and fills the festival grounds at B101 with the classic showmen's program. The city of Schwarzenberg is actively seeking attractive game, ride, and traveling businesses as well as side attractions — showmen can apply to the city. Experience shows that 30–50 different showmen's businesses are represented.
The exact opening hours of the showmen (from when to when each day) will be published shortly before the festival weekend on schwarzenberg.de or in the official gazette. Typically: Friday afternoon to late night, Saturday/Sunday noon to late night, Whit Monday morning to late afternoon.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Rides are charged individually — children's carousels €2–3, medium rides €3–5, Ferris wheel approx. €4. Food €4–10, drinks €2–5. Cash recommended — many showmen do not accept cards.
