20 Years of Running in the Palatinate Forest-North Vosges Biosphere Reserve
Since its first edition in 2006, the Pfälzerwald Marathon has established itself as one of Germany's most beautiful and athletically demanding marathons. With its 20th anniversary edition in 2026, the race underscores its significance for the region – and for the German running scene as a whole. The Palatinate Forest-North Vosges Biosphere Reserve provides the scenic backdrop that makes the run unique.
On Friday, September 11, 2026, a company fun run of approximately 5 km will open the marathon weekend. This run is aimed at corporate teams and amateur runners who want to combine camaraderie with athletic activity. It's also a good introductory course for running beginners who want to try out the format.
On Saturday, September 12, 2026, the main running festival is on the program. The Marathon (42 km, 660m elevation gain) starts at 9:15 AM and is the premier event. The Half Marathon (21 km, 300m elevation gain) starts at 9:45 AM and is the more popular alternative. Both competitions are also offered as relays: the Marathon as a four-person relay, the Half Marathon as a two-person relay. The event for the youngest participants is the Kids' Run (800 m, ages 5–15).
The routes lead through Germany's largest contiguous forest area. Sandstone heights, rock formations, forests, and deep valleys characterize the landscape. With 660 meters of elevation gain on the marathon course and 300 meters on the half marathon, the run is considered one of the demanding mountain races – a test of stamina and mental strength. The start and finish are at the Exerzierplatz in the heart of Pirmasens; the exhibition hall serves as the logistics center.
Registration for the 20th anniversary edition has opened. Detailed information on entry fees, pasta party, timing, and route details can be found at pfaelzerwald-marathon.de. Travel to Pirmasens is possible via the A 8 and B 10 motorways; overnight stays are recommended for many participants to manage the early start times effectively.
The 2026 anniversary edition marks 20 years of the Pfälzerwald Marathon. The route designs are classic and typical for the region – challenging elevation profiles, beautiful views, a true sporting challenge. Registration has opened.
