Four days of funfair bustle on Pentecost at Neumarkt Elberfeld
Wuppertal has a long funfair tradition. In addition to the large spring and autumn funfairs at the Vohwinkel and Elberfeld fairgrounds, there's a compact but fine version in the city center for Pentecost: the Pfingstkirmes at Neumarkt. From May 22nd to 25th, 2026, Wuppertal showmen will bring four days of funfair atmosphere to the urban heart of Elberfeld.
At Neumarkt — right between the town hall and the main shopping street — you'll find classic funfair attractions: dodgems, swing boats, carousels for the little ones, and a colorful mix of food stalls. Nut roasters, crêpe stands, bratwurst vendors, and sweet sellers complete the Volksfest (public festival) flair. The central location makes the Pfingstkirmes particularly attractive: anyone out and about in Wuppertal's city center can spontaneously drop by the funfair.
The Pfingstkirmes Wuppertal has established itself as a fixed date in recent years. It fills the gap between the large Vohwinkel funfairs and provides an additional highlight for Wuppertal's city center on Pentecost. Families from the Bergisches Land region — Remscheid, Solingen, Velbert — come just like day-trippers from the Ruhr area and Niederbergisches.
With around 350,000 inhabitants, Wuppertal is the largest city in the Bergisches Land region and one of the top cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Schwebebahn (suspension railway), which has been running over the Wupper River since 1901, is world-famous. Elberfeld is the central district with the town hall, shopping street, and cultural institutions — the natural center for an urban Volksfest (public festival).
The Pfingstkirmes 2026 opens on the Friday before Pentecost and runs until Whit Monday. At Neumarkt Elberfeld, visitors can expect the typical funfair attractions: dodgems, swing boats, children's carousels, nut roasters, crêpe stands, and food stalls. Dates have been confirmed by the organizer to the local magazine talzeit, but as is usual with many smaller festivals, they are subject to approval.
Free admission. Single rides at showmen's prices.
Schwebebahn (suspension railway) station Hauptbahnhof or Ohligsmühle — a few minutes' walk to Neumarkt. Wuppertal main train station with ICE/RE/RB connections. By car: A46 or B7, then follow signs to city center parking garages City-Arkaden, Schloßbleiche.
Funfair admission is free. Rides require individual tickets purchased from the showmen.
The bustle is highest on Pentecost Sunday. If you prefer it quieter: Pentecost Monday morning with family or Thursday evening for the opening. Dates are subject to official approval.
