Tip
Bring sturdy shoes for the ascent and rain protection — even with the tent alternative for bad weather, the mountain can become unpleasant. The highlight is the late afternoon in good weather with live music and sunset over the Werra Valley.
Ascent to the Krayenberg
The Krayenberg is a wooded vantage mountain above Vachdorf, with a wooden viewing platform offering views over the Werra Valley and the foothills of the Thuringian Forest. The ascent itself is part of the Pfingstfest — it starts at Vachdorf's village square and leads through the forest to the summit in about 30 minutes. Once at the top, the local heritage association operates a festival area with a barbecue, beer tent, and an open-air dance floor.
Bratwurst, Fish Sandwiches, and Live Music
The culinary program is classically Southern Thuringian: Thuringian bratwurst fresh from the grill, steaks and pork belly, fish sandwiches from the smoked fish stand. From the afternoon onwards, Vachdorf housewives serve cake from the village's bakeries — a tradition that is nowhere as good as at the Krayenberg festival. Accompanied by draft beer, sparkling wine, and soft drinks. A live band or ensemble plays in the afternoon — usually folk music, cover bands, or pop hits.
Vachdorf and its Association Landscape
Vachdorf is a small village in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district with just under 500 inhabitants. The association landscape is remarkably dense for its size: local heritage association, fire brigade, shooting club, carnival club, women's association. Throughout the year, they organize carnival, summer festival, Pfingstfest, sports festival, St. John's festival, and the heritage day. The Pfingstfest on the Krayenberg is one of the most visited events.
