Traditional three-day Pentecost festival in the spa gardens of the Bavarian pilgrimage site
Sankt Englmar, with about 1,500 inhabitants and situated at almost 800 meters in the Bavarian Forest, belongs to the district of Straubing-Bogen in the state of Bavaria. The town is a Marian and Englmar pilgrimage site and has been associated with its own legend about the hermit Engelmar since 850. Pentecost is the most important festival of the year here — with the traditional Englmarisuchen on Pentecost Monday, a horse parade, and the three-day Pentecost Festival in the spa gardens.
The opening on Saturday, May 23, 2026, starting at 7:00 PM, is the Summit Revival Party in the festival tent — a very popular event in the Bavarian Forest with folk music, pop, and rock. Sunday, May 24, 2026, is dedicated to the traditional musicians' gathering from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM: Brass bands from the Bavarian Forest, Lower Bavaria, and the Upper Palatinate will play alternately on the festival tent stage and in the spa gardens. Pentecost Monday, May 25, 2026, starting at 12:00 PM, features the actual Pentecost Festival — festival beer, festivities with live music, and a horse parade in the afternoon.
The Pentecost Festival is closely linked to the Englmarisuchen — the traditional horse procession and the staged re-enactment of the hermit Engelmar's rediscovery, which takes place annually on Pentecost Monday. According to tradition, this custom dates back to 1849 and has been celebrated uninterrupted for 175 years. The Englmarisuchen is an official intangible cultural heritage of Bavaria and is on the Bavarian list of cultural assets.
The Pentecost Festival is jointly organized by EC (Eisstockclub - Ice Stock Club) Hirschenstein and WSV (Wintersportverein - Winter Sports Club) Sankt Englmar — two of the most important clubs in the town, who operate their ice stock rinks and ski slopes at Predigtstuhl in winter. Together, they manage the festival tent in the spa gardens and provide catering, live music, and family entertainment.
For holiday guests spending Pentecost in the Bavarian Forest, Sankt Englmar is one of the most popular destinations. Horse blessing on Pentecost Monday, a festival parade, Englmar singing on Pentecost Saturday in the parish church, and the three-day festival tent make the weekend one of the most concentrated cultural events in Lower Bavarian festival culture.
The 2026 edition of the Pentecost Festival falls on an early Pentecost (Pentecost Sunday May 24, 2026). The festival activities in the spa gardens extend from Pentecost Saturday to Pentecost Monday. Key program points include the Summit Revival Party on Saturday evening, the Musicians' Gathering on Sunday, and the actual Pentecost Festival on Monday with a horse parade.
In advance, Pentecost in Sankt Englmar begins on Pentecost Friday with a stand-up concert by the Felsnstoana brass band at the church square and the Englmar singing in the parish church.
