Traditional Pentecost Beer Festival in Saalekreis
Kötschlitz is a small district of the town of Leuna in the Saalekreis district, in southern Saxony-Anhalt, between Merseburg and Leipzig. When visiting the village on ordinary days, you mainly see the remains of the baroque Rittergut (manor house), the village pond, and a handful of farmhouses. But on Pentecost, the village transforms into a small festival stage where the entire village life is concentrated.
The Pfingstbier is one of the oldest traditions in this corner of Central Germany. In villages like Räpitz, Kötschlitz, or Schladebach, it was maintained for centuries before wars and the GDR era interrupted many of these festivals. Since the founding of the Kötschlitz Local History Association (Heimatverein Kötschlitz e.V.) on July 7, 1999, the village has firmly taken its customs back into its own hands — and the Pfingstbier is now one of the highlights of the association's year.
The program follows a well-rehearsed rhythm: raising of the festival maypole, parade through the village, musical band, communal meal under the festival tent, games for the younger generations. While the adults debate harvest conditions and village gossip at the bar, the area around the 'Drachenburg' kindergarten belongs to the children. Each year concludes with a dance event on Pentecost Sunday and a relaxed wind-down on Monday.
The Kötschlitz Local History Association organizes several events throughout the year — Easter bonfire by the village pond, Halloween at the Anne Chapel, the joint Christmas tree lighting. The Pfingstbier is the largest and most atmospheric festival among them. Anyone wanting to discover Saxony-Anhalt beyond the well-known routes between Lutherstadt Eisleben and Naumburg will find an honest, village-based variant of regional festival culture here.
The Pfingstbier 2026 in Kötschlitz is on the event calendar for the town of Leuna for the weekend of May 23 to 24. As every year, the Kötschlitz Local History Association e.V. takes charge of the organization and ensures the smooth running of events between the festival tent, parade, and dance evening.
Detailed times and the exact stage program will be published shortly before the date, as is usual for village festivals of this size, via notices in the village and on the association's Facebook page.
The exact 2026 program is expected to be announced in early May via the Kötschlitz Local History Association's Facebook page and village notices.
