Traditional Easter fountain decoration with children's program since 1988
Since 1988, the fountain in Peine's historic market square has been festively decorated in the weeks before Easter. This makes the Peiner Osterbrunnen one of the city's longest-standing spring traditions. The tradition originally stems from the custom in the Franconian Switzerland region, where decorating fountains for Easter is a centuries-old tradition. In Peine, the custom was adopted in an adapted form and tailored to local conditions.
The decorating day is organized by the staff and children of the Kindergarten Regenbogen from the Peine district of Rosenthal. With painted eggs, fresh fir branches, colorful ribbons, and creative decorations, the fountain is gradually transformed into a spring work of art. The children experience how public space is shaped together and are proud co-creators of a city custom.
While the fountain is being decorated, a varied children's program takes place on the market square. Can tossing, egg races, face painting, and creative craft activities ensure that children not directly involved with the fountain also have a nice day in the city center. The program typically runs between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM and is organized by Peine Marketing in cooperation with local partners.
After the decorating day, the decorated fountain remains for several weeks until after Easter and is a popular photo motif and meeting point in the city center during this time. Many residents of Peine take a detour via the market square to observe the fountain's transformation and experience a piece of spring in the city.
The Peiner Osterbrunnen is a good example of how an adapted custom can evolve into its own city tradition. The combination of a spring symbol, kindergarten work, and public urban space makes the decorating day more than just a decorative measure. It is an intergenerational event that strengthens residents' connection to their city center.
While the fountain is being decorated, families and children are invited to participate on the market square. Between the various game stations, a lively spring festival emerges, enlivening the city center.
Grandparents, parents, and children can bring their own painted eggs and contribute to decorating the fountain. This makes the custom an intergenerational city experience.
