Atmospheric Christmas market in the historic old town on the 1st Advent
Ottweiler is one of the few towns in Saarland that have preserved their medieval old town almost completely. Narrow half-timbered houses, cobblestone alleys, the city gate, the Wilhelm-Heinrich Castle, and the town parish church create a backdrop that looks like something out of a fairy tale — perfect for a Christmas market. The town in the Neunkirchen district rightly drums up publicity: here, Advent is celebrated not in a modern city center, but on a historic stage.
The market is spread across three central squares: the Schlosshof with the Wilhelm-Heinrich Castle as an imposing backdrop, the Rathausplatz with the classic mulled wine stand and the stage for accompanying programs, and the Wilhelm-Heinrich-Straße with further stalls, woodcarvers, female felt artists, and beekeepers from Saarland. Between the squares, a stroll through the decorated half-timbered alleys beckons.
Choirs, brass bands, school classes, and occasional theater groups take turns on the stage. Classic Christmas carols mingle with modern Advent sounds, St. Nicholas strolls through the alleys, and mulled wine cups steam in the winter air. In case of snow — rare, but possible — the atmosphere is particularly magical.
Applications for stallholders are welcome from "all areas" — the spectrum ranges from classic bratwurst and Schwenkbraten (grilled pork neck) to Lyoner variations, Flammkuchen (flatbread), potato pancakes, and crêpes, as well as mulled wine, punch, homemade advocaat, and Karlsberg winter beer. Artisans offer ceramics from Hochwald workshops, felt hats from Saargau sheep wool, and Advent wreaths made from Saarland fir trees.
Anyone visiting Ottweiler should combine their visit to the Christmas market with a city tour through the historic old town. During the Advent season, the city offers special guided tours with the night watchman — a unique atmosphere when only lanterns illuminate the half-timbered alleys. The town church with its impressive interior is also worth a visit.
The date has been confirmed in the official event calendar of the city of Ottweiler. Applications for stallholders from "all areas" are accepted by the cultural office.
