Theater in the Summer Park
The Schiller Theater Rudolstadt has been one of Thuringia's oldest city theaters since 1793. For its summer open-air season, the ensemble leaves its sheltered spaces every year and performs under the open sky — for the first time in 2026 in the park of the Landessportschule Bad Blankenburg, one of the greenest venues in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district at the foot of Greifenstein Castle.
Three Formats on One Stage
The 2026 season combines three different program strands under the Schiller Theater umbrella:
- Theater — the main production "The Jester," a musical comedy based on the Danny Kaye film, runs as a permanent open-air production for several weeks
- Film Music Concerts — the Thuringian Symphony Orchestra performs "Movie Nights" with a grand orchestral program of famous film soundtracks
- Chamber Opera — "Sound Magic Under the Starry Sky" presents opera and operetta highlights with soloists from the Franz Liszt University of Music Weimar
- Show — "MMM – What Am I?" as a popular quiz show format
Bad Blankenburg as a Venue
The spa town at the foot of Greifenstein Castle offers ideal conditions for open-air theater: a quiet, park-like atmosphere, good accessibility (regional train, bus lines, car), and nearby dining options such as Café Allianzhaus, Hotel Steinhof, and Burgschänke Greifenstein for a theater break or a post-performance meal.
