UNESCO World Heritage: burning 280-kilo oak wheels roll down the Osterberg — a 2000-year-old Easter tradition in Lippe
The Osterräderlauf in Lügde is one of the oldest and most extraordinary Easter customs in Europe. UNESCO recognized it as intangible cultural heritage in 2018 — an honor that elevated the tradition from the realm of folklore to the status of protected cultural property. The oldest surviving documents mention 1743, but researchers believe the custom's roots reach back two millennia — possibly pre-Christian Celtic or Germanic solstice rituals.
On Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, at 9 PM, the spectacle unfolds: Six oak wheels tightly packed with rye straw — each 280 kilograms heavy, 1.7 meters in diameter — are ignited on the Osterberg above Lügde. They then roll down the slope, burning, into the Emmertal valley. Spectators witness six fireballs rolling down the mountain, followed by a grand fireworks display. The wheels end their journey in the Emmerauenpark — one of the most impressive sights in the German festival calendar.
Behind the spectacle stands the Dechenverein Lügde e.V. (also known as 'Osterdechenverein'), a traditional customs association with about 600 members. The members — 'Dechen' is the old Low German word for keepers of tradition — craft the wheels anew each year, organize the stuffing, coordinate their placement on the Osterberg, and carry out the run. It is collective voluntary work — and the reason the tradition has survived for centuries.
Lügde is located in the southernmost part of the Lippe district, on the border with Lower Saxony, about 10 km south of Bad Pyrmont and 30 km east of Detmold. With around 10,000 inhabitants, Lügde is a small town — yet the Osterräderlauf attracts thousands of visitors from all over Germany and Europe each year. Anyone traveling in the region at Easter should definitely include Lügde in their plans.

For the most impressive experience of the wheel run, position yourself on the slope of the Osterberg. Avoid the very top (too close to the start, no overview) and the very bottom (too close to the fireworks). The middle of the slope offers the best view of the entire run. If you can come the day before (Holy Saturday) for the stuffing, you'll get a special insight into the craftsmanship.
