About Open Cellars Ruwer

From May 14th to 17th, 2026, vintners in the Ruwer Riesling region will open their cellars in Waldrach, Kasel, and Mertesdorf for a four-day wine weekend. Organized by the association Ruwer-Riesling e.V., the event offers visitors the opportunity to taste the current vintages from family wineries in the Ruwer Valley in a relaxed atmosphere and to talk directly with the vintners. With only around 200 hectares of vineyards, the Ruwer is one of Germany's smallest but most renowned Riesling growing areas. The five days around Ascension Day 2026 mark the start of the wine festival season in the Ruwer Valley and are closely linked to the simultaneous hiking event 'Wein im Weinberg' (Wine in the Vineyard).

The Open Cellar Days are one of the central wine events in the Ruwer Region – the small but exceptionally distinctive valley for Riesling, which flows into the Moselle near Trier. From May 14th to 17th, 2026, vintners in the towns of Waldrach, Kasel, and Mertesdorf will open their cellars and tasting rooms to visitors from the region, from Trier, from Luxembourg, and for wine tourists from all over Germany.

The Ruwer-Riesling e.V. association bundles the activities of the local wineries and coordinates the event. Both well-known, internationally renowned houses – which have shaped the region's reputation – and smaller family businesses, whose wines are often hard to find outside the region, are involved. This mix is one of the attractions of the event: over a weekend, you can taste top Rieslings from the vineyards Karthäuserhofberg, Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg, Kaseler Nies'chen, or Waldracher Sonnenberg in comparison.

With around 200 hectares of vineyards, the Ruwer has a significantly smaller area than the Middle or Lower Moselle, but it has developed a distinctive style: the Devonian slate soils, combined with the cool locations, produce particularly fine, nuanced, and long-lasting Rieslings. Dry, off-dry, and noble-sweet styles are all produced.

In 2026, the Open Cellar Days will take place concurrently with the wine hike 'Wein im Weinberg' (May 14th), also organized by the association – combining both offers an experience of the Ruwer Valley over a long weekend, both in the cellars and on the steep slopes. Exact opening hours for individual wineries and the complete list of participants will be published on ruwer-riesling.de.

Open Cellars Ruwer — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Open Cellar Days runs from May 14th to 17th. In the three Ruwer Valley wine villages of Waldrach, Kasel, and Mertesdorf, vintners will open their cellars and pour the current vintages. The focus is on the fine, mineral-driven Rieslings of the region. On Thursday, the 'Wein im Weinberg' wine hike between Kasel and Waldrach will take place concurrently. Combining the two formats makes the Ascension Day weekend one of the most important dates in the Ruwer Valley's wine year. Complete list of participating wineries and individual opening hours on ruwer-riesling.de.

The 2026 edition continues the proven four-day format. Due to the long weekend around Ascension Day, both day-trippers and overnight guests are expected.

Staying overnight in the region and using shuttle services or taxis is recommended, as many wineries operate with tasting formats.
